Iris was the only daughter of Eric and Fran Russell from the 30th century. They thought that their world was going to be destroyed by war. With the help of a time traveling John Fox they were able to send their daughter into the past safe from the assumed destruction. She was discovered by Professor Ira West who raised her alongside his own children (never telling her of her true origin). As an adult she became a world famous photojournalist and fell in love with police scientist Barry Allen. On her wedding night the new Iris Allen discovered that her husband was actually the second Flash. A realization that brought them even closer together. A few years later Iris was murdered by Barry's arch-enemy Professor Zoom/Reverse Flash.

Back in the 30th century John Fox had managed to avert the war and the Russells used experimental equipment to snatch Iris's "soul" at the moment of death and to place it into a cloned body. She lived once more. In her absence Barry tried to rebuild his life and was forced to use lethal force to stop Zoom killing again. He was tried for Zoom's murder and was almost found guilty before Iris traveled back and exposed Kadabra who was rigging the trial. Afterwards Barry went to live with Iris in the 30th century. They only had a brief period together before Barry gave his life to save the universe during the Crisis.

Iris was pregnant with twins when Barry died. They were born the following year and she named them Don and Dawn. The twins grew up to become speedsters just like their father and were killed while defending the Earth from aliens. Don's son, Bart, was born with uncontrollable superspeed and began ageing rapidly. Iris was forced to bring him to the 20th century so that Wally West could help him control his superspeed. Bart would become the kid speedster Impulse. Shortly afterwards Iris dropped out of sight and began writing a biography on Barry Allen. Several supervillains tried to force her to reveal future history but they were defeated by Wally West and John Fox. Iris now spends most of her time in seclusion.
