Hippolyta "Lyta" Trevor is the daughter of the original Golden Age Fury. She was raised by adoptive parents called the Trevors, living between Virginia and their own South Sea island. Her natural superpowers (superhuman strength, endurance and speed) had certainly developed by her college years and she toyed with the idea of becoming a superheroine. It was not until she moved to the University of Southern California and began a romantic relationship with Hector Hall that she took on the identity of Fury as a founding member of Infinity Inc.. She later married Hector, becoming Lyta Hall, and become pregnant by him. Shortly afterwards Hector was overtaken by the curse of the Silver Scarab and was killed. Hall's spirit was captured by two entities from the Dreaming called Brute and Glob. They convinced Hall to replaced Sanford Garrett (who had gone mad and died) as the third Sandman and become the defender of Dreams. As the Sandman Hector could only enter the real world for a hour each day. When she discovered that Hector was still alive Lyta went to live with him in the Dreamworld. However Brute and Glob had ulterior motive of their own. Morpheus (Dream) had been imprisoned by a human sorcerer and they sought to create their own ruler of the Dreaming by sealing off the Dreamworld inside a young boy's head and appointing their own Sandman. When Morpheus escaped he tracked down Brute and Glob. He returned Lyta to the real world and sent Hector into the afterlife where he should have been. However from Lyta's point of view it appeared as if Morpheus had killed her husband. Morpheus hinted that there was a connection between himself and her unborn son. Lyta now fearing him warned him to stay away from her son, but did consent to the suggestion of the name Daniel. After Daniel was born Lyta tried to rebuild her life. Unfortunately Daniel was kidnapped by enemies of Morpheus and his body burnt. During the search for Daniel Lyta steadily lost her grip of normal reality. When she learnt that Daniel was apparently dead she blamed Morpheus and invoked the Furies. Because of her familiar connection to the Furies (her mother was an avatar of the Furies) and because Morpheus was responsible for the mercy killing of his own son they agreed to avenge her. The Furies killed Morpheus, but not before the soul of Daniel was elevated to become the new Dream. At Morpheus's wake Daniel absolved Lyta of any blame and placed a mark on her to prevent any retribution. Despite all of this Lyta was barely able to comprehend much of what went on around her. |
