The Blackhawks were a crack team of international aviators founded during the second world war by Major Janos Prohaska. He was a member of the Polish resistance who adopted the codename Blackhawk after the death of his family at Nazi hands. He drew together an elite flying unit whose trademark black planes were sponsored by the United States and Great Britain. The team grew to include Captain Andre-Blanc-Dumont, Captain Carlo Sirianni, Captain Ritter Henricksen, Lieutenant Weng Chan, Captain Olaf Friedriksen, Captain Stanislaus Drozdowski and Captain Natalie Reed. After the war the team drifted until Blackhawk reunited the team to battle the a Chinese bandit called the Red Dragon.

From then on the Blackhawks never looked back. For years the Blackhawks were part of the low key community (including the Challengers of the Unknown and the Doom Patrol) who helped defend the planet and with the appearance of the Justice League they even experimented with heroic code names and silly costumes. Their base Blackhawk Island was used by alien invaders from the planet Appellax as a prison camp for Earth's heroes in the first months after Superman's appearance. More recently the name Blackhawk has become known for Blackhawk Express an air freight business that serves as a cover for the Blackhawks more covert activities
