John on Roseanne
For those of you who got word of the Roseanne show appearance too late to
program your VCR:
I just looked at my tape of the Roseanne show. Roseanne introduced John
by calling him "the guiding light" of CCR, her favorite group of all time,
and said he's "the reason I learned to play air guitar." She then went on
to say John was going to play one of her favorite, favorite songs, "Almost
Saturday Night." John had the Waters backing him up, and the mix was
better than on the Premonition album, as John's vocals were turned up, and
you could hear him over the Waters. No mistakes, the band was tight -- all
in all, that performance is one of John's best on TV ever. And for those
interested in such things, John was wearing his shiny blue shirt and black
pants.
Then they showed "Proud Mary" from the Premonition video and flashed up
some trivia: "In 1898, 'Mary' was the most popular name for a girl." This
segued into a pretty long interview with John where Roseanne said her
little boy went to see John perform because John's his favorite singer.
Her son loves "Hot Rod Heart." Roseanne said everywhere she goes, her son
makes her play it, and when the song is over, he makes her go back and play
it again. John mentioned that his own kids picked that one out, too, and
it must be something about being three or four years old. :)
John then gave Roseanne a teddy bear ("Put me in Coach") and a Premonition
T shirt for her little boy. Roseanne then said that John had invented a
whole different kind of music for people to listen to, and John said she
was being very gracious, which she denied. :) They discussed the various
elements that influenced John's music -- rockabilly, R&B, etc. John
specifically mentioned Elvis, and Roseanne said she had guessed that
already, because there was a straight line from Elvis to John. John seemed
kind of blown away by that remark, and she countered by noting the
simplicity and straightforwardness of the music of both men. John also
mentioned Ray Charles as an influence, among others.
Roseanne then said that John's music seems to be a combination of spirit
and mojo, sort of like New Orleans. John responded by saying that as a
kid, he really liked science fiction and spooky movies, and he also loved
Edgar Allan Poe. And the monster movie stuff sort of exploded at the same
time music exploded, and the two kind of came together in his mind.
Roseanne then mentioned Screamin Jay Hawkins and how he had a similar
thing going. John talked about "Spell" and the old Dracula movie and did a
brief imitation of Bela Lugosi rising up out of the coffin. Roseanne
wanted to know how John got from El Cerrito to the Bayou, and John said he
really doesn't know -- that if you believe in past lives and reincarnation
and all that, that might explain it. He is truly fascinated with all
things Southern and has been all his life, and when he was a kid, he really
paid attention to movies and literature about the South. He specifically
mentioned that movie, "The Defiant Ones," where Sidney Poitier is chained
to Tony Curtis. He then talked about how he wrote "Proud Mary" when he had
never been to Louisiana, and Roseanne asked him how many people had
recorded that song. John said he didn't know, probably hundreds. She
asked him if he had a favorite version, and he said probably Tina's.
Roseanne then requested a verse of "Hot Rod Heart," which John played on
acoustic guitar, sitting there in the chair next to Roseanne. The audience
got into it and was clapping as they rolled the credits.
That's about it. Hope most of you taped it, 'cause Almost Saturday Night
was awesome.
