Access Solutions
As I come across possible solutions to access problems you may find yourself dealing with, I will add them to this page with as much information as I can. Most of our battle to remain independent for as long as possible is because the information is scattered hither and yon. Piecing the information you can find and making a knowledgeable choice that will be in your long term best interest is a monumental task.
I have no affiliation with any of these companies, so these suggestions are just that, based on my own personal experiences. I hope you find them helpful. I will include website URL's whenever possible, but whenever I was in doubt I found a wonderful company near where I live, and turned to them for their advise. I would urge you to visit the sites, make notes about the equipment you think you are interested in, and then either take the time to call this company for their input and to find out if they have any other product that might fit your needs better.
I am very grateful to Darrel Smith, Chuck Kutz and Tom Hollenstein for their patience with my unending stream of questions. There was never any pressure to purchase any products from them (a very unique experience). They honestly wanted to help me make my own choices, in my own time. I am sure you will be treated with the same kind of respect and caring as I have been. Don't be fooled by the name of the company, they have access to any and all the possible types of equipment you might find a need for. The name of the company is:
Adaptive Driving Systems,Inc. Phone Number: (818) 251-9876
Corporate Office/Showroom FAX Number: (818) 251-9846
7959 Deering Avenue TOLL FREE Number: (888)595-3525
Canoga Park, CA 91304 Orange County: (714)921-2571
Now while I have located different types of equipment that I think you may find useful, I have not tracked down the prices, which will probably vary depending on where you purchase them. If you can not get a straight answer from whoever you contact, I would just tell you to call the company I have mentioned above and know you will be treated fairly.
The ramp I have put here is one that can only be operated by a TAB family, friend or attendant that might accompany you. I am including it because I know some will have a need for it to be able to visit family, friends or take a vacation that might otherwise not be feasible.
Before purchasing any equipment ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS. Think about your long term needs. Will you be able to take the equipment with you if you change your address? Have someone help you measure the doorway or doorways and the distance between the floors. You would want a deeper ramp to allow your transition to be a smooth one.
I think this one is very exciting. How many times have you been told by a building management that they are working on making a building accessable and time keeps passing and nothing changes? Well it has been TEN years since the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed and signed into law, but most places are still singing the same old song. Take this information with you (print out a copy or call the manufacturer and request a packet of information on the types of ramps you might need) and then go and "discuss" the situation armed with the information of how the job can be done.
Truthfully, from my personal observation, I don't think much will change until we all become activists, find attorney's that specialize in enforcing the ADA laws and take the powers that be into court and force them to comply. This is a sad statement on our society, because when any facility is truly ADA complient it is much more convenient for ALL to access ALL that the facility has to offer
