Americans with Disabilities Act and U

Marilynn designed a stamp to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the passage of the ADA Laws and uses it on all number 10 envelopes she sends out in the mail to remind anyone seeing it that ADA Laws exist and need to be complied with.
Help make the American's with Disabilities Act a reality!

1.  Get to know your local represenatives.  Become an advocate.  The more
accessable a community is, the more citizens of all ages, sizes and abilities
     benefit.
2. Sign a Spirit of ADA Petition, go to http://www.spiritofada.org.
3. Get your elected officials and candidates running for office to sign a
Spirit of ADA Pledge, go to http://www.spiritofada.org.
4.  Implement the Olmstead decision, "Activate your license to change the
      system, " go to http://www.freedomclearinghouse.org.

"On June 22, 1999, the United States Supreme Court held in Olmstead v. L.C.
that the unnecessary segregation of individuals with disabilities in
institutions may constitute discrimination based on disability."

5. Request a copy of NCD's ADA Report on enforcement and implementation,
it'll be released June 27th, 10 AM, at the National Press Club, Mark
Quigley, mquigley@ncd.gov.

6.. Distribute this message and the web site for Save the ADA,
               http://www.save-ada.com, far and wide.

My own thoughts

Many people with Disabilities have jobs, active social lives and are contributing members of society. Many, would like to have the opportunity to acquire the skills to be able to have a job,but because there is little or no governing force to break down the barriers which the passing of the ADA laws were supposed to accomplish, society does not benefit from the contributions people with disabilities might be able to give it. We can not help but ask the following questions......

1)   When will the barriers be removed?

2)   When will employers be more willing to hire the disabled?

3)   When will merchants realize that we have to eat, cloth ourselves, buy gifts and therefore
spend money in their establishments and comply with the ADA guildlines?

4)   When will public transportation, i.e. city buses with lifts for wheelchair/scooter users
become the reality that was promised the citizens about 11 years ago and which was
also mandated  via the ADA laws and the intent behind them? The intent behind the
ADA laws was to allow the citizens of all ages to remain as independent and self-
sufficient as humanly possible for as long as possible.

Please, contact your government oficials to support and enforce the intent of the ADA Law.  Society as a whole will  benefit in every way.
