Things to think about......
Remember the wonderful feelings
and adventures you were able to go on when someone took the
time to read to you?
CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY.
Many Public Library's have programs to bring books to shut-ins. Not only will they provide books, but many have the audio books available upon request too. The list of library's that have videos you can borrow, is also ever increasing. IT IS FREE! If these services would benefit you, please make that call.
Many people with PPS, not only have to deal with the normal eye problems that come with aging, but with Polio affected eyes. Eyes are controled by muscles and nerves. All the muscles and nerves in a Polio survivor's body were effected even if they had no visiible damage immediately after the Polio. You do not have to suffer the lose of enjoying literature of all kinds. Large print and audio books are available. Talk to your librarian.
Yes, we know one of the many lessons Polio survivor's and others with disabilities, were taught by society is that they were never to say the words "I need" or "I want", but there are many out there that get great pleasure in doing a good deed, so look at it as doing them a favor, instead of letting the old feelings of shame and embarrassment stop you. It is an excellent way of taking that first step towards saying and doing what others do naturally.
If you are still able to get around, and would like to help others, let your local library know you would like to get involved with this type of program, or one of the other programs they have available and need people to get involved in. Both sides benefit.
Sylvia and I were involved in the GAB (Grandparents and Books). We had to drop out because of constant health problems this past school year, but highly recommend it to anyone that can do it.
People, particularly those that grew up with "being different" are generally "givers" and need events, goals , and purpose to look forward to, to make their lives worth living. Any community that keeps obstacles in their way or forgets to include them in activities that benefit the community as a whole, are wasting a valuable resource.
