Post Polio Information & More
Lincolnshire Post-Polio Network - Main Gate
Polio Experience Network of Spokane. WA
The physiologic mechanisms that have been proposed to explain the
emergence of PPS in Polio survivors; how PPS can be distinguished
from other diseases; and how it is currently treated.
NOTE: Many PPSer's find themselves dealing with sudden swallowing
and digestive problems in a much more disproportionate number
of the "normal" population, such as hiatal hernia, sudden choking
and swallowing problems, Irritated Bowel Syndrome,
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease etc. Patients and Doctors
need to keep in mind that the stomach is a complex
combination of muslces.......all the muscles and nerves in a Polio
survivor's body, INCLUDING the eyes, may show losses due to the
PPS.

Understand that certain items, i.e. wheelchairs, scooters, breathing equipment, adjustable beds, some bathing equipment, and more are covered by your insurance or Medicare, provided your doctor writes an order for the piece of equipment. Not all wheelchairs or scooters are alike. They come in various sizes, with different options. Your needs should and must be addressed before aquiring an expensive piece of equipment like this, because your insurance coverage will only provide you with a like piece of equipment once every 5 years.
Anyone supplying you with a piece of equipment should provide a service for a trained personnel to measure you, make recommedations to you, and give you an opportunity to try the equipment prior to purchase. If they have any questions or suggestions I would expect and insist that they contact your doctor to discuss the information so that you are provided with the equipment that will provide you with the best possible scenerio. REMEMBER: There is no such thing as a stupid question! Do NOT let yourself be intiminated or feel pressured to accept a piece of equipment that will not fit your lifestyle.
The ideal situation would be for your doctor to refer you to an Occupational Therapist and a Physical Therapist. The doctors in most cases, are not familiar with all the equipment that might help you stay as independent as possible for as long as possible. On the other hand, that is exactly what a good Occupational Therapist and/or Physical therapist can and should do for you. They are kept appraised of the latest utensils for enabling you to take care of all, or most of your personal needs as well as the larger items and the available options of lifts, manual and motorized chairs, scooters, beds etc. Some are very creative and can combine or make modifications to some equipment that will make it much easier for you to function.
