Our Hobbies
I am not sure whether to define the things I get involved with as hobbies or obsessions. I have always been involved with some sort of "art work"if you define that expression loosely, and problem solving to help people whenever possible. I have worked with many medias and love to turn what some would clasify trash into something useful or amusing. This automatically has turned me into somewhat of a packrat.
I am sure you noticed on our first page, Sylvia and I are using decorated scooters and holding decorated canes. I change the decorations depending on the season. The inspiration for the decorations in that first picture was the celebration of my older son's wedding this last May.
Another activity that I frequently get completely absorbed in is designing stickers, cards, cartoons, and experimenting with the wonderful world the computer has opened for me.
It is not easy to find novel Channukkah decorations so I frequently design and make my own. The Star of David is made out of pine and I made it many years ago when I had plenty of arm and hand strength. I painted it a dark blue. I found silver and blue garlands and wraped it as tightly as I could and used gardening plant ties to hold it in place. Then I added several sets of lights to liven it up some more.
The decoration hanging in the center of the star was a gift I received from Sylvia's daughter last year. It finished the effect I wanted perfectly.
This is the little Christmas Village I have been making for Sylvia since she moved here 3 years ago. Some of the buildings are made from unfinished bird houses. The bank and firehouse are made from paper, reinforced by pieces of file folders. The effects are a combination of computer graphics that I modified, paint and glitter. The golden Christmas trees are made from pine cones, decorated with graphics I either drew or clipart that I modified to suit my purpose. Each decoration is cut, Modge Podged and then decorated with glitter.
The little bench is made out of popsicle sticks, and then decorated with pain and tiny graphics done on the computer. The small gingerbread house to the right of it is a gift box project I found in the Print Shop Deluxe 6.0 Program. I added a lot more decorations than the project came with. The top of the roof of the bank was done by gluing some kitty litter.
Here are 3 pine cones I decorated using graphic done on the computer and sized accourding to the size of the cone. I used beads from old costume jewelry, glitter and Modge Podge.
Brighten your world and the world around you
by decorating your "tools".
A little ribbon and tape goes a long way. I added small
Christmas ornaments to Sylvia's cane.
This is how I decorated our scooter baskets for the Holiday Season.

Back in the 60's when my children were little, I embarked on a writing career. I had hopes of becoming a photojournalist. To that end I took some classes at Mesa Community College in Mesa, AZ. When I first put a few words on paper, they jumped around and became a children's story. Not what I had in mind at all!!! Words have a way of leading a writer down a path the writer hadn't thought of yet. Roll with the flow-and that's what I did. Two children's picture books were born and published: "Wrong Way Howie Learns to Slide" and "Davy Plays Football."

No matter how many years go by or what fate has dealt me, writing has always been a passion of mine. Whether it's a political treatise or a satire, a letter urging action or a document of protest, I enjoy writing.

People and pets also get my attention. Helping others, especially those who are new to PPS, brings a tremendous amount of satisfaction to me. So many need help in learning how to adjust to this new aspect of Polio. I use the word "adjust" loosely. It is a difficult process. And many of us fight it to the nth degree.

And of course my biggest challenge today is the care and feeding of my housemate, Marilynn, lol. As you can tell by the constant changing and additions of this site, pulling her away from the computer to eat or to take care of matters, is no easy task. With lots of laughs and many giggles, it is a treat to have another PPSer to share life's path with.
