Why Michael Nader Got Fired from AMC (SOD 6/22/99)
"As reported last
issue, Michael Nader has been let go from the role of Dimitri Marick on All My Children,
and will last air in late July. Nader is a charismatic actor who has chemistry with
virtually everyone he works with, from Susan Lucci (Erica) to John Callahan (Edmund). Even
given budget considerations (the money to hire big-ticket star Finola Hughes had to come
from somewhere; Hughes will join AMC in mid-summer, around the same time that Nader will
exit). AMC's decision to write out Dimitri came as a surprise. After all, he's just one of
several highly-paid vets at AMC who are not being utilized.
So, why Nader? 'He has made no secret of his unhappiness with All My Children,' says one insider. In fact, while Nader honored his limited press commitments with professionalism, he did exhibit crankiness off the set. It couldn't have have helped that Nader went through personal problems that were chronicled in the tabloids. And while AMC is giving up a popular 40-something leading man, the show does have an embarrassment of riches in this particular category: Callahan, James Kiberd (Trevor) and Walt Wiley (Jackson) are all in storyline limbo at the moment.
Don't think AMC underestimates Nader's contribution- word has it the character won't be killed off. In fact, an insider hints that when Nader leaves, the door will be left wide open for him to return. 'No comment!' says an AMC spokesperson."
