RECENT EARTHQUAKES

July 9, 1998 -- The Bhutan region of the Himalayas was disturbed by an earthquake of 5.0 magnitude (Richter Scale)at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday. The Indian Meteorological Office in New Delhi said the tremor was centered in the northeast of Bhutan. There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries.

STRONG EARTHQUAKE IN NORTHERN INDIA KILLS 87
An earthquake struck a seismic hot zone in India's Himalayan foothills on Monday, March 29, 1999. This earthquake destroyed houses, and caused landslides while killing at least 87 people.

This was the strongest earthquake this century in the prone mountains, with magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter Scale. This quake lasted for about 40 seconds. The epicenter for the earthquake was in a remote area of the Kumaon Hills in the state of Uttar Pradesh, 185 miles northeast of New Delhi.
