Ivan Longinovich Goremykin

1830-1917

After an career as government official he in 1891 became Minister of Justice and 1895 as Internal Affairs Minister. Despite Goremykin always been a liberal he as minister continued the reactionary rule of his predecessor I.Durnovos. One of his law proposals was to expand the Semstvo-institutions to strengthen the Nobles power against the growing bourgeoisie class, who's growth was caused by The Minister of Finance Witte, an conflict between Goremykin and Witte caused Goremykin's resign in 1899.

Before the opening of the first Duma in 1906 Goremykin was appointed Minister President and now had the obligation to control the People representation. He failed totally: After Goremykin's first appearance in the Duma the government received a vote of censure. Goremykin was once more forced to resign. In 1914 he once more became Prime Minister. His politic that strengthen the War Party left the way open for World War One. When Goremykin in the Duma was exposed for heated up attacks (caused by Military failures on the Eastern front), He advised Czar Nicholas II to adjourn the Duma. But the Duma was assembled again, then Goremykin once more resigned in February 1916. Goremykin was influenced from different directions, such as Rasputin whom got his power after Goremykin's Resign. After the February revolution 1917 Goremykin was arrested. He was released and traveled to Caucasus, where he in December was murdered by an Bolshevik guerrilla force.
