Anonymity on Internet
Many people are suspicious today that when surfing , they are being
watching by a "Big Brother" , or they have reasons to
stay anonymous .
I) Surf anonymously .
1) Manage cookies on your browser . Cookies are a small data
files that contains personal data requested by the sites you 're visiting . Do
not disable them because some sites may not work , just make the browser ask you
whenever a site requests a cookie .
In Internet Explorer 5.0 you can set from:
Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Custom level -> Cookie
-> [x] Prompt (in all cases) .
In Opera 4.x you can set from:
File -> Preferences -> Privacy -> Cookies -> Display received
cookies .
Do not allow any cookie when you want to surf anonymously . If the site does not
work it's up to you to decide .
Alternatively if you use some firewall program like AtGuard or Norton
Internet Firewall , you can handle the cookies from there , without making any
special setting in your browser . Read my AtGuard page
for more .
2) Use anonymous proxy server . I highly recommend to use MultiProxy
. It's an excellent freeware application . Not only search & tests the best anonymous
servers , but acts as a proxy server in your local LAN ( i.e. can share your
internet account ) where it acts pretty fast . If you don't want to install the
program you can use one of the anonymous servers listed in the site with your
current web browser .
OR
2b) If you don't want to download & install anything (when you do
not own the PC you are using), you can surf through anonymizer
or anonymizit
. If you want more secure anonimity you can combine both options: use Multiproxy
or a single anonymous proxy and visit anonymizer .
II) Send anonymous emails .
In past there were many anonymous email servers . None of them
exists today . The reason is mainly that they can easily be abused by people
that want to send masses of email messages . You can do some other tricks
like:
1) Surf anonymously , disable cookies & visit web sites
that sends emails like Zoubidoo
or Somebody
. There are several others but be aware because some of them does not function
(most of them are broken
links to an old engine from anonymizer.com) . Send a test email to yourself in
order to test a valid site .
2) Use anonymous remailers . It's a lot complicated . More details
on:
http://anonymous.to/remailers.html
III) Maintain an anonymous email account .
Again surf anonymously , disable cookies and then create a new account in a web mail
service . There are many web mail services with that level of anonymity like Anonymous.to
, CJB or 888.nu . I found no difficulty
to create an account there with cookies
disabled , under Multiproxy . If it's impossible to create or manage your an email
account without receiving cookies , then try another web mail server .
