in the 200m IM, won his favorite event tonight in a New CR 1:55.47,
less than a second off the world mark he shares with Hungary's Attila Czene.
Jana Klochkova (UKR) won the women's 200 IM in a very fast 2:08.28, a New
CR and the second fastest time ever swum behind only Allison Wagner's world
record of 2:07.97. Alenka Kejzar of Slovenia, was a very strong second
in 2:09.33. Italy's Emiliano Brembilla repeated his last year triumph in

to win in 3:40.60; Sweden's Stefan Nystrand defended his 50m sprint
title, but not in the worthy time 21.55 ; Leading from start to finish
in the 200 fly, Eva Risztov (HUN) won in 2:07.19, more than a second in

Just two months after the closing
ceremony at the European Long Course Championships in Berlin, the European
swimming family is looking forward to another great spectacle involving
the best swimmers in Europe. |
|
 |
|
The largest team will be that of
the hosts, Germany, followed by a strong Russian team, France, the Ukraine,
a young British team, Sweden and Spain. Excellent squads will also be competing
from Croatia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Finland. Italy has announced
the presence of all their finalists from the Summer Long Course Championships
in Berlin, and Hungary indicated to LEN that they will attend with their
top team for the first time ever at any Winter Championship. At this early
stage it is appropriate to ask if Germany will be able to retain their
top rank in the overall medals table, in front of Sweden. Italy, Russia
and the Ukraine must be certainly considered too amongst the hot favourites
to become the team winning most individual gold medals at the European
Championships in Riesa (GER) where a temporary 25 meter, 8 lanes pool will
be set up with stands for up to 3000 spectators. |

|
In co-operation between LEN and

Event. Each chosen athlete will receive 1.500 Euro, together with sincere
good wishes for a successful career leading up to the Olympics in 2004. |
