How Toby came to Metta Cattery

Before she became a resident of Metta Cattery, Toby has been seen wondering outside Metta Cattery for several months. We believed she was owned by someone within that vicinity.

She had been seen being pregnant a couple of times, but curiously, there was no sign of her kittens, except for one which subsequently disappeared. We suspect her kittens could have been killed by snakes/dogs or poisoned by humans (there were many cases of animal poisoning around that area).

In early August, Toby was seen being pregnant again. This time, she seemed to be loitering in front of Metta Cattery, as if wanting us to take her in. Perhaps she wants to give birth in a safer environment to ensure her babies can survive.

One day. on her usual visit, Siew Ying opened the gate of Metta Cattery and suddenly, Toby dashed right past the gate and into the dogs' compound! Thank goodness, she was not harmed by the two dogs!

Soon after, Toby gave birth to four lovely kittens and has since happily became a resident of Metta Cattery. We think she is happy and feels safe (and well-fed) within Metta Cattery.

Toby is a good mother and has never once let her kittens out of her sight!! We are happy to report that her four kittens are growing healthily and stronger by the day. Toby will be neutered next month.

hi all

tyler was brought to the vet on 10/4 (wed) & seen by dr ang. her condition/prognosis then:-
1. slightly juandice
2. fever
3. cloudy eyes
4. walking wobbly
5. relatively skinny

dr ang recommended tyler be kept in the clinic for better observation, & was hospitalised till 17/4 (wed).

during that period, dr ang noted that tyler was eating very well & active. he's still wobbly though. she's discharged him with some medication as there's no need to keep him in the clinic as he's seemingly ok with normal appetite, pee & poo. as his wobbliness, this cld be a clinical sign of FIP. if this so, then no amt of medication will save him if the FIP is taking effect. all he needs now is lots of TLC & intensive care. hopefully with the medication & supplements, he's able to pull thru & get stronger each day.

wee kiat has very kindly agreed to foster him until he completes the course of medication. she's spoiling him with freshly steamed fish which tyler is certainly enjoying & meows for more.

once again, a very big thk you to wee kiat for her big help!

"Tyler's condition is stable. We think we know why he used to pee when we syringe him. I think it has to do with the fact that we were wrapping him up in towels to restrain his limbs. We have stopped doing this and (touch wood) he is taking down his medication as well as can be under the circumstances, without peeing. Lisa and I are honing our skills to medicate him with each passing day.

As I told Salie the other day the syringing is accompanied with lots of stroking and patting to put across to Tyler that it is a part of our loving him rather than inflicting suffering on him. I now follow up each session by singing to him or telling him what a great fighter he is. And he lies in his box taking it all in . I think he actually likes it. This morning he even gave me a smile.

"Dear ALL

Tyler is fading very fast. He is completely limp, very quiet, is incontinent and refuses all food. It is impossible to syringe him and I have stopped doing so. He is resting comfortably and seems at peace. I think the time has come."

"Just want all of you to know that Tyler had a very good night last night. Good intake of food and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw he had pooed (but not at his litter tray). Good solid poo. We spent some quality time together and I even told him I had to clean him up a little so that he will smell good and look nice. I tissued him and the mood was generally upbeat in his little room.

It couldn’t be more contrasting this morning. He just gave up or can no longer fight on. After we put him back into his cage this morning, I told him quietly not to be afraid. That we are all solidly behind him, that he is very loved, has been tremendously brave and should be very proud of himself."

You can shed tears that he is gone
or you can smile that he has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that he comes back
or you can open your eyes and see all that he's left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see him
or you can be full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember him and only that he's gone
or you can cherish his memory and let it live on

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what he'd want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on

24th November 2002, 12.42pm; SMS from Sharon:
"Thanks to Sebastian, Toby was buried behind the cattery.
Let's remember Toby as a loving mother who took great care of her 4 kids.
She was also well liked by volunteers and visitors with her gentleness and grace.
While her death remains a mystery we take heart she was well fed and well taken of while she was at MettaCattery."

25th November; Salie recalled:
"I named her Toby after Topbreed cuz she used to hang outside the cattery until her last pregnancy. She dashed into the dogs area, risking her life and Siew ying took her in.

She was nearly sent for an abortion but on the day itself, she gave birth to 4 lovely kids.

She had her good and bad times..."

25th November; Sharon Chan recalled:
"I'll miss her, but I'm very fond of the other cats as well.

One thing I never managed to get Toby to do is sit quietly on my lap. She didn't like to be carried for long either. Very often, another cat would barge in when I'm stroking Toby, climb onto my lap, & basically steal my attention - or demand it by meowing loudly! But Toby was always very patient & would walk away & wait for her turn again later. She never scratched any cat because of this."
