Pai Kar
("limping" in the hokkien dialect) was a male stray residing at Aljunied MRT.
When I started feeding the strays there, a cat lady limbing with an
umbrella for support, pointed Pai Kar to me and told me about his
deformed front leg. I noticed that he has adapted to his deformity
and eating well. One night in early Year 2002, Sharon,
Salie, Karen, Jenny and me wanted to bring a black female cat
from Aljunied for sterilization. But we failed to get her,so
we went to the Aljunied MRT station to try to get one. Pai Kar was the
only one that we managed to get, because he could not run away
fast. Upon examination by the vet, we were told that
the nails in the paw of the deformed front leg had cut into the
flesh causing it to become sore. Suggestion was to amputate the leg,
but we were of the opinion that it was too drastic. So we told the vet
to sterilise him and attend to the sore on the paw. We then
started looking for someone to adopt Pai Kar. Good news came
before Pai Kar was discharged. A kind lady by the name of May Ng,
agreed to adopt Pai Kar. She ever saw Pai Kar before, when we met for
the first time at Aljunied MRT. So on the day that Pai Kar was
discharged, he went to his new home at Tampines. Pai Kar was given
special food and he gobbled all of them. Even though Pai Kar
was fierce at that time, May patiently took care of him. Soon he put on
weight and became less fierce. One evening, Pai Kar
escaped from his cage and was sitting on the edge of the front balcony.
May was scared that he would jump down or lost his balance.
However, Mei tried coaxing him down with food. Finally, she succeeded
and he was named "Bravery".
But then came the unforunate news.
Around middle of the year, for some medical reason, May couldn't take care of
Pai Kar at home. After discussion with MettaCats volunteers "Bravery" was
boarded at MettaCattery. May is sponsoring his boarding fee.
