Don Clark of TFU (Training For Utopia) - Back

1. How did the band get started? How did you meet and how long have you been together?

Don Clark: We were all friends for a few years before we started...I just basically wanted to start a noisy metal band, that was the style I was into at the time...we started TFU in October of 1996.

2. How would you describe your music?

Don Clark: Heavy. Chaotic. Cool.

3. What are your biggest influences?

Don Clark: As far as bands?? Hmmm....I like so many bands, but for TFU, i'd have to say...Unsane, Today is the Day, Neurosis, Coalesce, Marilyn Manson, Atari Teenage Riot, etc.

4. What influence do you think your bands has in music and metal today?

Don Clark: Not real sure, when we started, there were only like 4 or 5 more popular noisecore bands, now there are 84302498 of them...so we have evolved over the years into something more original I think. the whole noise thing got oversaturated. We kind of want to be our own thing now.

5. What made you want to be in the band? And if you weren’t in the band what would you be doing now?

Don Clark: I don't know what I'd be doing! probably in another band. I just wanted to start a band because my brother had and I was into the music so much, I learned to play guitar and started a little project called training for utopia...I had no expectations except to rock!

6. Are any band members in side projects? If so what are they, and explain a little about them.

Don Clark: Yes, Ryan and I are. they are kind of top secret at the moment...but soon enough, people will know about them.

7. How would you feel if a band took their sound from yours and became very well known?

Don Clark: Oh well...happens ALL THE TIME with other bands...I think it has probably already happened with us!!

8. What current bands do you like or respect?

Don Clark: Rocket from the Crypt, Radiohead, Meshuggah, Marvelous 3, Fountains of

Wayne, i could go on and on...

9. How many demos/albums do you have? Tell me about them!!

Don Clark: 1 demo that turned into our first EP..."The Falling Cycle". Our first full length "Plastic Soul Impalement"...a good learning experience...our split EP with Zao...now, the new full length...and hopefully a remix album in the near future!

10. What demo/album do you like the best?

Don Clark: The new record by far.

11. What is the meaning behind the songs?

Don Clark: Different issues, things. Some humorous, some not.

12. What are the bands favorite songs?

Don Clark: Hmmm. So many. Personally, I like dead signal (the first song I ever wrote), a good feeling, both songs from the split, alot from the new one...

13. What does the future hold for the band?

Don Clark: Not sure...we are all doing different things...TFU doesn't pay, so we'll see how long it can last...we all have busy lives...

14. If you could play with any band who would it be and why?

Don Clark: Radiohead...best band in history as far as I'm concerned.

15. Who writes the majority of the music?

Don Clark: Me.

16. Who has been the favorite band you’ve played with and why?

Don Clark: Probably Zao, they are our great friends...we've known them since the beginning...

17. Where did you get the band name from?

Don Clark: From the "Swingkids" movie soundtrack. It is the name of a song on the record.

18. Describe what the band is like live?

Don Clark: Pretty sloppy, noisy, loud.

19. If you are gonna do any kind of video what would be in it?

Don Clark: We actually did a video for the song "Two Hands" on 'Plastic Soul'. It's on the 4th Tooth & Nail video. But, we hate that one now...our video now would be pretty crazy.

20. Are there any touring plans made; if so tell me about them?

Don Clark: Not really, we are sooo busy...maybe if Slayer called us or something!

21. Where do you think the band will be 20 years from now?

Don Clark: Broken up.
