1. How did the band get started? How did you meet
and how long have you been together? Danny Lilker:
Argh, ancient history! SOD got started as an outlet for Scott to play
really fast and heavy shit and still have Anthrax do their thing,
which was somewhat more palatable. I already knew him and Charlie
from Anthrax, obviously, and they introduced me to Billy. Since SOD
is not a normal band that's been doing albums and touring since the
first record, you can't really say we've been "together" all this
time, so that's hard to say... 2. How would you describe
your music? Danny Lilker: Basically aggressive,
fast metal with hardcore influences. 3. What are your
biggest influences? Danny Lilker: Lyrically -
all the idiots in this overcrowded planet; musically- I don't know,
Slayer? 4. What influence do you think your bands has
in music and metal today? Danny Lilker: I know
that a lot of people in a lot of bands have told me over the years
that hearing SOD had a profound influence on their music, and in some
more extreme cases inspired them to start a band in the first place!
That's always flattering, and humbling. As far as specific examples,
can't think of any now. 5. What made you want to be in
the band? And if you werent in the band what would you be doing
now? Danny Lilker: Well, when Scott called me
back in April '85 and explained the concept and asked me if I wanted
to do it, it sounded killer, plus it was cool to get to play with
them again after Anthrax. If I wasn't in SOD, I'd still be doing my
other stuff, but that looks like an answer for your next question...
6. Are any band members in side projects? If so what are they,
and explain a little about them. Danny Lilker:
I play in a black metal band called Hemlock, I wouldn't refer to it
as a project 'cos we have been together for over 4 years, but I am
doing a project band called Ravenous with Killjoy from Necrophagia
and Chris Reifert from Abscess/x-Autopsy. I don't know what the other
guys have going on, if anything. 7. How would you feel
if a band took their sound from yours and became very well known?
Danny Lilker: I guess that would depend on how closely
they sound to us, if they took our exact riffs it would be kind of
fucked up, but if they just resembled us and acknowledged that we
were a big influence (causing their fans to maybe check us out), that
would be cool, I suppose. 8. What current bands do you
like or respect? Danny Lilker: Everybody sucks,
including all my bands. 9. How many demos/albums do you
have? Tell me about them!! Danny Lilker: If you're
talking about stuff I've personally appeared on, I don't feel like
racking my stoned brain to remember, one day I will make a point of
documenting all of it, until then,........ 10. What demo/album
do you like the best? Danny Lilker: Very hard
to say, different bands I've been in have satisfied different facets
of my musical tastes and desires... maybe "Speak English Or Die",
"Extreme Conditions...." by Brutal Truth, the new Ravenous record,
"Assembled In Blasphemy"....... 11. What is the meaning
behind the songs? Danny Lilker: Mostly (we are
speaking of SOD now, right?) that this planet is too over-stuffed
with useless assholes and something radical must be done to rectify
this abysmal situation. 12. What are the bands favorite
songs? Danny Lilker: I personally like "Evil Is
In" and "Pussywhipped". 13. What does the future hold
for the band? Danny Lilker: After the summer,
when Anthrax is done touring, we will do some more shows here and
there and discuss doing one more record. 14. If you could
play with any band who would it be and why? Danny
Lilker: I would have liked to have been Jimi Hendrix's bassist
'cos I'm high. 15. Who writes the majority of the music?
Danny Lilker: Scott had a lot of the first one
written when I came into the picture way back when, but I wrote a
lot of "Bigger...". 16. Who has been the favorite band
youve played with and why? Danny Lilker:
Whew.... uh.....I guess Mercyful Fate (we played a couple of festival
dates with'em last year in Europe). 17. Where did you
get the band name from? Danny Lilker: We are Sgt.
D's army. 18. Describe what the band is like live?
Danny Lilker: Very intense and funny to boot...
19. If you are gonna do any kind of video what would be in it?
Danny Lilker: We have been filming a lot of show for a
long-format video that is being edited right now, so you'll see.
20. Are there any touring plans made; if so tell me about
them? Danny Lilker: Like I said, maybe in the
fall. 21. Where do you think the band will be 20 years
from now? Danny Lilker: Hahaha, hopefully just
in the records books! We don't want to play live when we're in our
mid 50's!!!!! |
