Johan Sånesson of Monolith - Back
1. How did the band get started? How did you meet and how long have you been together?

Johan Sånesson: Well, the band started with me, Johan (guitars), and Jon(drums), and a guy named Anders. We played together a while, but then me and Jon felt that we needed to move on. Also Anders quit because of musical differences. Jon knew this mean guitar player (Mattias) from school and asked if he wanted to play. That's how Mattias joined. Later, on of our friends Stefan, who we all knew from before joined. In the beginning we had a guy named Kalle Wallin on vocals, but that was just temporary. A short time before we weregoing to record "The Praetorian Face Damnation" Mattias told us about this guy he knew (Martin), who could growl. So we gave it a shot and here we are.

2. How would you describe your music?

Johan Sånesson: It's a mix between the brutal metal from Southern USA, and the melodic part of Swedish metal. All with a little touch of our sick minds.

3. What are your biggest influences?

Johan Sånesson: The band as a whole doesn't have any real influences. We try to make our own type of music. But individually, on the other hand, we listen to everything from, jazz, blues and folk music to melodic and fast brutal metal.

4. What made you want to be in the band? And if you weren’t in the band what would you be doing now?

Johan Sånesson: The fact that I have liked music since I was just a kid. I felt it would be cool to play an instrument, so I bugged my dad until he got me a guitar, and when I played it i just felt like: Man, I need to play in a band. It must be great. If I hadn't been in a band, I would probably have done better in school. So  I guess i would have been studying in the university or I would have had a job.

5. Are any band members in side projects? If so what are they, and explain a little about them.

Johan Sånesson: I'm in two side projects. One is a brutal punk band (Solfågel or in english, Sunbird), where Jon also participates, and the other is a melodic death metal band (Pandemonium) with a lot of influences from the eighties. Mattias has alot of side projects, that I don't know the names of, and Stefan has a power metal band named Thannatos. Jon is also playing in Thannatos.

6. How would you feel if a band took their sound from yours and became very well known?

Johan Sånesson: I don't know. I think I probably would have become a bit irritated. I would have been angrier if someone had stolen our songs.

7. What current bands do you like or respect?

Johan Sånesson: Right now I listen alot to bands like Hypocrisy, Death and In Flames. I respect almost every band who is true to the music. I don't care much for bands who just wants to make money.

8. How many demos/albums do you have? Tell me about them!!

Johan Sånesson: We currently have one demo/mini CD. It was recorded in just two days. It's a great compilation of songs. Both brutal yet soft. Anybody can listen to it.

9. What is the meaning behind the songs?

Johan Sånesson: I don't really think that there's a meaning. In every riff that we write there is a part of what we felt like at that exact moment. Be it tired, angry or just plain sad, the riffs express our emotions at the time we wrote them. At least, that's what I think.

10. What are the bands favorite songs?

Johan Sånesson: I think that the bands favorite is Praetorian Shadows.

11. What does the future hold for the band?

Johan Sånesson: We plan to record another CD with better songs and production, as soon as we get the money, and hopefully we'll get a couple of gigs as well.

12. If you could play with any band who would it be and why?

Johan Sånesson: If you could play with any band who would it be and why? I'd play with Pantera, since they are my favorite band of all time. They have an extreme energy when on stage and they don't have one really bad song.

13. Who writes the majority of the music?

Johan Sånesson: All music this far is written by me and Mattias.

14. Who has been the favorite band you’ve played with and why?

Johan Sånesson: It's Monolith and Pandemonium. Monolith, because I like the action that goes on in the crowd when we play live, and Pandemonium because I like that type of music better.

15. Where did you get the band name from?

Johan Sånesson: We were going to play our first gig ever, and we needed a name, so Jon came up with it. I think it's from a Cannibal Corpse song title, but I'm not sure.

16. Describe what the band is like live?

Johan Sånesson: We're loads of fun. We have little chats with the audience and we've even had a sing-a-long. There's also alot of headbanging going on. We try to put alot of energy into the gigs as well.

17. If you are gonna do any kind of video what would be in it?

Johan Sånesson: We are making a video right now. I'm not sure about everything that's going to be in it, but we are playing in it, as in a show. There's also a girl in a forest involved. I can't really tell you anymore.

18. Are there any touring plans made; if so tell me about them?

Johan Sånesson: No touring plans yet.

19. Where do you think the band will be 20 years from now?

Johan Sånesson: Hopefully at Wembley stadium, playing in front of tens of thousands of metal heads....No, seriously, I have no idea. We'll just have to see what happens.
