  • Our annual hunt was held on October 12, 2003. If you were unable to join us at this event, you missed a great time. There was a good exchange of ideas and techniques and plenty of laughter to go around. An extra special thank you goes out to Jay Brown, Shirley Brown, and Charlie Blenkner. It was through their efforts and hard work that the hunt was successful. Also, thanks go out to Charlie Cline and his fine team of helpers for the layout and burial of coins.

  • Time is short, and before you know it, we will be asking for all members to submit their nominations for next year's Board. Several of the members who are serving this year have already stated that they will not be filling these same positions next year. We are looking for some new faces!

  • It was decided at our last meeting to make our October meeting our fall auction to raise funds for our Christmas Party. Be sure to check your closets for all those yard sale items and bring them with you to our next meeting. We had plenty of laughs and lots of fun at our spring auction. If we all join in, we can make this event just as successful.

  • Thanks to all who brought their "goodies" to the meeting for the auction. It went quite well; we raised nearly $100.00 for our fall hunt. Thanks also to all who bid and spent their money to reach that amount. We even had items left over for the Chinese Auction.

  • Ray Heckman brought in the business cards we needed to introduce ourselves to property owners who otherwise might not let us hunt their property. by showing that we are members of a national organization, we just might gain access where otherwise we would be rejected. Thanks, Ray, for your work.

  • A mini-hunt will be held on the club grounds prior to the start of our monthly meeting on June 25th at 6:45 pm. There will be no digging. Marked coins will be redeemed for silver coins at the meeting.

  • Once again, it is time to start looking forward to our Annual Hunt. We will need someone to take charge of getting prizes, as well as making other plans. If you can help, please contact one of the club officers.
  • There are several upcoming events being sponsored by other clubs in the mid-Atlantic region. Be sure to check the calendar for details.

  • A Word to the Wise From Our Newsletter Editor...
As the cold temperatures of winter ebb and the warm breezes of spring tug at our shirttails, we realize it's time to restock our toolboxes and replace our old or damaged tools. Careful preparation of your supplies now will ensure that little time is wasted at your hunt site. Why plan a productive day at a distant location only to discover that your batteries are dead and you don't have an extra battery pack? Dust off that toolbox, and make a list of any item(s) that need replacing. Be sure to carry an extra supply of batteries, digging tools, extra apron, etc. Create your own individual supply list and keep it in your toolbox. Checking your list before each hunt will help keep you at your peak performance.

  • A special thank-you...
...goes out to our March guest speaker, Steve Noga for his informative presentation on Civil War relic hunting. His willingness to share his knowledge of Civil War sites and detecting in general is much appreciated.

  • Want to Know More About Loch Raven Reservoir?
Recently, member Joe Dinisio attended a seminar entitled "Discover the Many Secrets of Loch Raven," sponsored jointly by the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, Inc. and the Watershed Protection Coalition, Inc. An informational pamphlet was distributed that covers the highlights of that seminar, and thanks to Joe's thoughtfulness, we now have the text of that pamphlet available online. • Business Cards Are Here!
The new club business cards were introduced at the April meeting. With this new tool for generating interest and potential new members, we should all focus on being creative. Coin shops, hobby shops, detector dealers, and even supermarket bulletin boards are places that might provide some exposure for the club. And of course, don't forget to carry a couple with you when you're out detecting. Those curious bystanders who stop you to ask about your finds could be future detectorists! With our new and improved newsletter, this website, and the new cards, we have lots of tools at our disposal for helping the club expand. Let's make the most of them!

  • 2-15-02IMPORTANT: Full-Time Executive at the FMDCA?
Our national organization has proposed the hiring of a full-time executive. They feel that, with this change, the organization would be better able to lobby on behalf of detectorists in Washington. The executive officer would receive an annual salary of $15,000 to $20,000. This would increase our membership dues to $35 effective January 2003. The club voted, at our January meeting, to have the elected officers pay their portion of this increase, should it occur, to lighten the financial burden for the club. For this year, membership will remain at $25. Our president, Jay, voiced his concerns about what the Federation has (and has not) done for our club, and whether the hiring of a new executive would provide any direct benefits to our club. Though our communication with the Federation has been limited in the past, it was discovered that the Federation communicates with clubs actively through its website. If you have questions, you can email the the Mid-Atlantic Chapter directly by clicking here.
    1-29-02Rumor has it...
...that our club is going to be invited to a very special archaeological project through the Maryland Historical Trust. The Department of Natural Resources has recently expressed interest in looking at what may be a Civil War campsite in a state park, and has contacted the MD Historical Trust about launching a project. If it happens, Dr. Susan Langley of the Maryland Historical Trust has informed us that our group is one of only two detecting groups that will be invited to participate in the dig. We'll keep you posted as details emerge! For more information, click here to visit the MHT website.
