The recreation center will hold its annual carnival from May 13 - May 18 The center would appreciate 2 volunteers from our club per evening to help work this carnival. We still need coverage for Friday and Saturday. Email the club if you are able to help. As the cold temperatures of winter ebb and the warm breezes of spring tug at our shirttails, we realize it's time to restock our toolboxes and replace our old or damaged tools. Careful preparation of your supplies now will ensure that little time is wasted at your hunt site. Why plan a productive day at a distant location only to discover that your batteries are dead and you don't have an extra battery pack? Dust off that toolbox, and make a list of any item(s) that need replacing. Be sure to carry an extra supply of batteries, digging tools, extra apron, etc. Create your own individual supply list and keep it in your toolbox. Checking your list before each hunt will help keep you at your peak performance. ...goes out to our March guest speaker, Steve Noga for his informative presentation on Civil War relic hunting. His willingness to share his knowledge of Civil War sites and detecting in general is much appreciated. Recently, member Joe Dinisio attended a seminar entitled "Discover the Many Secrets of Loch Raven," sponsored jointly by the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, Inc. and the Watershed Protection Coalition, Inc. An informational pamphlet was distributed that covers the highlights of that seminar, and thanks to Joe's thoughtfulness, we now have the text of that pamphlet available online. Click here to read about this fascinating area of Baltimore County! The new club business cards were introduced at the April meeting. With this new tool for generating interest and potential new members, we should all focus on being creative. Coin shops, hobby shops, detector dealers, and even supermarket bulletin boards are places that might provide some exposure for the club. And of course, don't forget to carry a couple with you when you're out detecting. Those curious bystanders who stop you to ask about your finds could be future detectorists! With our new and improved newsletter, this website, and the new cards, we have lots of tools at our disposal for helping the club expand. Let's make the most of them! 2-15-02 | IMPORTANT: Full-Time Executive at the FMDCA? | Our national organization has proposed the hiring of a full-time executive. They feel that, with this change, the organization would be better able to lobby on behalf of detectorists in Washington. The executive officer would receive an annual salary of $15,000 to $20,000. This would increase our membership dues to $35 effective January 2003. The club voted, at our January meeting, to have the elected officers pay their portion of this increase, should it occur, to lighten the financial burden for the club. For this year, membership will remain at $25. Our president, Jay, voiced his concerns about what the Federation has (and has not) done for our club, and whether the hiring of a new executive would provide any direct benefits to our club. Though our communication with the Federation has been limited in the past, it was discovered that the Federation communicates with clubs actively through its website. If you have questions, you can email the the Mid-Atlantic Chapter directly by clicking here. 1-29-02 | Rumor has it... | ...that our club is going to be invited to a very special archaeological project through the Maryland Historical Trust. The Department of Natural Resources has recently expressed interest in looking at what may be a Civil War campsite in a state park, and has contacted the MD Historical Trust about launching a project. If it happens, Dr. Susan Langley of the Maryland Historical Trust has informed us that our group is one of only two detecting groups that will be invited to participate in the dig. We'll keep you posted as details emerge! For more information, click here to visit the MHT website. |
