Dance floor etiquette is a way to fully utilize the dance
floor so that everybody has fun
Drinks, food, and cigarettes should never be brought onto
the dance floor. Spills can be slippery and dangerous.
The dance floor is divided into lanes. Traffic moves around the dance floor
in a counter-clockwise direction. This is called the Line of Dance (LOD).
Never dance against the Line of Dance.
The outside lane is the FAST lane. This lane is for faster moving dances
such as the two step.
If you are doing a slower dance such as Cotton Eyed Joe, Schottische or
Cowboy Cha-cha, use the slow lane.
Dancers in the fast and slow lanes should avoid cutting the corners. This
will increase the size of the dance floor.
Swing dancers should use the corners.
Line dancers should use the center of the dance floor. Line dancers should
never occupy all the floor space and prevent other dancers from taking the
floor. During a popular line dance where the floor gets filled up, progressive
dancers should probably let the line dancers have the floor.
Free-style dancers should use the free space behind or in front of the line
dancers.
Dancers using the slow and fast lanes have the right of way. Stationary
dancers (line, swing, free-style) should not block these lanes.
Don't stay on the dance floor to chat.
If you start a line dance, go to the front so that others can fall in behind
you.
Don't start a different dance unless there is plenty of room.
If you bump into someone, apologize whether or not it was your fault.
Don't walk through a line of dancers to cross the floor. Go around the floor
or wait for the song to end.
Don't teach on the dance floor in the way of other dancers who are on the
floor.
