SALTILLO MONUMENT 1.

Location: Stirling describes the discovery of Saltillo Monument 1, during his return to Tres Zapotes, as follows: "About a mile and a half beyond Saltillo is a small hill on a natural ridge. Near the top of this was the inscribed stone." (Stirling 1943:29). Placed in the site museum at its dedication in 1975.

Associations: "Years ago, according to a native who joined us, someone excavated on the side of the hill by the rock and found a number of small figurines." (Stirling 1943:29).

Condition: well preserved.

Material: This monument was not tested by Williams. However, there is nothing about it to suggest that its material is any different than that of Monument 1.

Dimensions: Height 100 cm, Width 100 cm, Depth 190 cm.

Description: Saltillo Monument 1 is a crude petroglyph face and abstract designs on large rounded boulder.

Remarks: Stirling refers to this stone as near Saltillo in his text, but labels it as San Juan River in the caption to Plate 16b.
