MONUMENT 10 (J)

Location: Stirling reports the discovery of Monument 10 during the 1938-39 field season "in excavating a small low mound [Structure 3] in the great plaza just to the west of Mound A, Group 1, at a depth of about 4 feet" (Stirling 1943:23). Yet, Weiant reports the discovery of Monument 10? in Mound 2B [Structure 8!] as follows. "On top of this mound was a seated figure with the top part missing (Weiant 1943:14). Monument 10 has disappeared since Stirling's time.

Associations: Weiant asserts that extensive excavation [in Structure 8] produced only a few sherds of Coarse Black ware and one sherd with numerous perforations." (Weiant 1943:14). Coarse Black and "numerous perforations" wares do not appear elsewhere in Weiant's report.

Condition: The head and shoulders of the figure are missing.

Photographs: Present report, Plate 18; Stirling 1943a: Plate 9c; Milbraith 1979: Figure 29.

Drawings: de la Fuente 1973:301.

References: Stirling 1943a, 1965; de la Fuente 1973; Milbraith 1979.

Carved Areas: Sculpture in the round.

Material: This monument was not tested by Williams. However, there is nothing about it to suggest that its material is any different than that of Monument 1.

Dimensions: Height 40 cm, Width 47 cm, Depth 40 cm.

Description: Monument 10 is a cross legged seated human figure with its hands resting on its knees. The sculpture is very compact and angular. The limbs are also very compact and cylindrical in cross section. The limbs do not taper toward the extremities and flow into one another without sharp distinctions. The lower legs do not cross one another and feet are not indicated. The hands are poorly defined lumps at the ends of the arms and digits are not indicated. The head has been broken off and a clean fracture remains at the neck. The figure grasps a cylindrical bar in its hands.

Remarks: Stirling says that at the time of its discovery Monument 10 "had been painted red, and considerable sections of the red paint still adhered to the stone" (Stirling 1943:23).
