Deirdriu of the Sorrows
Ballad of a Celtic legend

 Deirdriu of the Sorrows

A cry within the chamber walls
The King went in to see
A mother and her newborn child
A daughter named Deirdriu

This babe will have such beauty
But she will cause you strife
Because of her the Magician said
Many men will lose their life

So he hid her in the forest
And kept secret by the King
For the newborn baby Deirdriu
Would someday be his Queen

Tomorrow came and tomorrow went
Many years had gone by
And just as the Magician said
She was beauty to one's eye

Then one day she chanced to meet
A Soldier of the King
And when she looked upon his face
Her heart began to sing

Tomorrow I'm to marry
The old man that is King
But it's you I love, O' gallant knight
And I will wear your ring

That night the lovers made their way
To a land controlled by others
And all she took was herself
The Soldier and his brothers

Tomorrow came and tomorrow went
The King showed no concern
He said he missed his gallant men
And asked for their return

Deirdriu pleaded not to go
Tears flowed from her eyes
As it will be the death of us
For what he says are lies

But the Soldier trusted the King
And left the land of others
And all he took was himself
Deirdriu and his brothers

A feast was given by the King
To hide what he was thinking
Then he showed his true intent
After food and song and drinking

The King had sent his army
The lovers tried to flee
The Soldier and his brothers killed
A hundred times their three

The King grabbed hold of Deirdriu
His hand tight upon her wrist
And dragged her to the castle hall
Where she loosen from his fist

She ran outside the castle walls
Up to the canyon edge
And hit her head upon a rock
When she stumbled off the ledge

Tomorrow came and tomorrow went
As tomorrows often do
But there are no tomorrows
For Deirdriu of the Sorrows
