TAYAMMUM

Tayammum (dry ablution

Tayammum (dry ablution)
if you are sick or on a journey, or one of you comes from the privy, or you have intimate relations with women, and you cannot find water, betake yourselves to pure earth...??t;br>(Al-ma`idah 6)

When Should We Perform Tayammum
1. When it is not possible to procure sufficient water for performing Wu? or Ghusl.
2. If a person is unable to procure water on account of fear, or because he does not possess the means to draw water.
3. If a person fears that if he uses water his life will be endangered, or he will suffer from some ailment, etc.
4. If a person fears that if he uses water for Wud? he will be involved in hardship because of thirst.
5. If procuring water is expensive and will cause financial difficulties.
6. If procuring water leads to disdain and disgrace.
7. If there is a shortage of time to procure water or to use it so that the time for ?at will lapse.
8. If the water is just enough to remove contamination from the body and clothing.
9. If a person was certain that water would be harmful for someone else or his illness, he should keep him away from it.
The Messenger of Allah says:
? earth was ordained a mosque and pure place.??t;br>(Al-was?l Vol.2, p. 969)
Things on Which Tayammum is Allowed
1. Earth and sand.
2. Stone and rock.
3. Pebbles and whatever is understood to be the surface of the earth.

Circumstances of a Valid Tayammum
1. Tayammum should be performed on things which are valid.
2. Whatever is used to perform tayammum should be pure.
3. Whatever is used to perform tayammum should be permissible.
4. The place which is used to perform tayammum should be permissible.
5. The parts of body for Tayammum should be pure.
6. No impediments like rings, etc should be on the parts of the body on which tayammum is performed.
7. All the acts of tayammum should be performed in proper sequence.
8. The performance of one act of tayammum must be followed immediately by the performance of the next act.
9. The performance of tayammum should be done without assistance, if possible.

Things Which Invalidate Tayammum
The same things which invalidate wudu in addition to the removal of the grounds which warrant the performance of Tayammum.
Method of Performing Tayammum
Begin with the intention; i.e. we sincerely intend to perform tayammum to please Allah the Exalted. Then, we begin as follows:
1. Strike both our palms once upon the earth. (Fig.1)
betake yourselves to pure earth and wipe your faces and your hands therewith...??t;br>(Al-m?dah 6)
2. Wipe the entire forehead with the palms of both hands from the hairline down to the eyebrows and above the nose.

Orders Regarding Tayammum
1. Striking the palms of the hands on earth is obligatory, placing the hands on the earth alone is not sufficient.
2. Performing Tayammum prior to the arrival of the time of ritual prayer is void.
3. Pass the left palm over the entire back of the right hand and after that, pass the right palm over the entire back of the left hand, as the figures 4 and 5 indicate.
An Issue Concerning Tayammum:
If we had performed Tayammum for a prayer whose time had already arrived, and that Tayammum and the grounds which warranted its performance have not been invalidated until the time of the other ?at has set in, we are allowed to make that ?at with the same Tayammum.
4. Pass the right palm over, the entire back of the left hand and after that, pass the left palm over the entire back of the right hand, as figures 6 and 7 indicated.
An Issue Concerning Tayammum
One upon whom Ghusl is incumbent, must perform Tayammum twice for his ?at, the first, in the place of Ghusl and the second in the place of Wudu.
