He was born in place called Abwa between Mecca and Medina. Poisoned He died of poison while he was unjustifiedly imprisoned for fouteen years. He endured brutal torture in imprisonment in Haroun's Jail, scacely without any food and water.. So much was his torture and starvation that his body was bundle of bones covered up by loose broken skin, due to the daily whippings he received from his jailers. His body was prepared for burial by his son the Eighth Imam Ali Al-Reda(as) and was buried where his shrine still stands today in the Kathumiya suburb of Baghdad, in Iraq. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- He was the most knowledgeable person of his time and the best of them He was very generous, brave and of excellent spiritual perfections and worshiped with long prostrations in the presence of Allah(as). Because, his self control over his anger was great and second to none, as such that he was named, Al-Kathum(as), which means having great control over one's own anger. Once a poor person asked him for some help, and the Imam(as) just to know the man's attitude of mind asked him some simple questions. When the man answered them properly, the Imam(as) rewarded him in appreciation of the alertness of the man's mind. And gave him a thousand Dirham instead of a hundred that he had asked for. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Worship Devotion One late night, in the very early hours Harroun Ibin Mahdi Ibin Mansur then the usurper of the Caliphate, the socalled 'calipha of the Muslims' of that time, was as usual in a state of stuper and couldn't sleep. He being alone, at an impulse wanted to meet with the Imam(as). So he sent one of his servants to the Imam Al-Kathum's(as) house, to demand of him, an immeadiate audience at his palace. The servant told the ever drunken Harroun. That when he had arrived at the Imam's(as) house. Where he found the Imam Al-Kathum(as) in the state of prostration before Allah(swt) with his hands and face pressed on the ground, with dust still on his forehead and the sides of his face. The servant could not bring himself to interrupt the Holy Man in his prayers. Even though Harroun still wanted him to fetch immeadiately the Imam(as). Harroun reddened and angrily shouted at the servant to get out, before he decided to have him beheaded. He then slumped drunkenly over his couch and slept. His love of worshipping Allah(swt) and prostrating before Him was so much so, that he breathed his very last breath during his prostration before Allah(swt), in humble Prayer --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
