• Only one Harley model per year, a battery-fired single cylinder, so any designation more than just year was superfluous. A Harley was just a Harley.

• The factory offered four singles, with either 26- or 28-inch wheels (wheels were measured from the outer edge of the tire back then), and either battery or magneto ignition. These were referred to as the Model 5 (fifth year of production, which, for Harley-Davidson purposes, began in 1904). Motor numbers 2500-4200

1962-1969

• Engine number is the VIN and is located on the left case.
  NO frame number. (Generally speaking, I have gotten word that some during 1965-69 did have frame numbers, as well as a different number sequence stamped on the fork crown and transmission case.
  Shovelhead engines were introduced. Basically the new engine was the Panhead bottom end with a Shovelhead top end with a new aluminum oil pump.
  • First two numbers are the year.
    Letters (up to four) are the model.
    Last numbers (four or five) are the production number.
    (Note: If production number has four digits, the first number will be even if the year is even, odd if the year is odd. If production number has five digits, the first two numbers will be even if the year is even, odd if the year is odd.)
