David Robert Jones es el verdadero nombre
de David Bowie. Se cambió el nombre para no ser confundido con otro músico.
David Bowie nació el 8 de enero de 1947 en Inglaterra.
Gracias a su hermano Terry, David comenzó a
sentir un especial interés por el jazz, por lo que desearía ser un
saxofonista. Además de eso, como es de todos conocidos, Bowie se dedicó
también a trabajar como mimo y actor, aspectos que le han servido de gran
ayuda en sus shows y como cantante. Asimismo, en la Universidad estudió Arte
y Publicidad.
Como todos sabemos, Bowie es apodado El
Duque Blanco, como uno de los personajes que ha creado, pero también se le
denomina "El Camaleón", lo que queda muy claro al observar sus
distintos cambios de look acomodándose a cada época y a las necesidades
estéticas y creativas de sus propios trabajos. Así, por ejemplo, ha sido un
extraterrestre andrógino (Ziggy Stardust), un rockero drogadicto (Aladdin
Sane) o incluso el Rey de los Duendes en la película Laberinto de
1986.
El primer disco de David Bowie se llamó
simplemente David Bowie y es del año 1968. Pero ya para 1970, con la
edición del disco The Man who sold the World, podemos verlo en la
carátula con el pelo largo, semi-tendido en un sillón y con un vestido de
mujer en lo que sería sólo un adelñanto de lo que vendría más adelante, con
los personajes ya aludidos como Ziggy o Aladdin, en los que coquetea
constantemente con la indefinición sexual y lo alzaría como el ícono dl
llamado Glam rock de los años 70s en Gran Bretaña.
En 1969 aparece su disco Space Oddity
(que primero se llamaría Man of words, Man of Music), concepto creado
a partir de la película de Stanley Kubrick 2001, Odisea del espacio y
por supuesto la llegada del hombre a la luna en ese año. El tema emblemático
de este disco es, obviamente, "Space Oddity", que trata de un
astronauta que se pierde en medio del inmenso espacio.
En 1971 aparece el disco Hunky Dory
y al año siguiente el álbum Ziggy Stardust. En 1972, además, produjo
el álbum Transformer de Lou Reed, ex integrante de los Velvet
Underground, y que contiene el tema "Perfect Day". Del mismo modo,
en cierta ocasión ayudó también a Iggy Pop en la edición de su disco The
Idiot. Sin duda, tanto Bowie, como los Velvet o Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, como
el movimiento glam en general, adelantaron mucho de lo que vendría después en
materia estética y musical, o tal vez sería mejor decir que fueron ellos
quienes de una u otra manera crearon y promovieron dichas propuestas.
En 1973 aparece el disco Pinups. En
1974, en tanto, aparece el disco Diamond Dogs, el cual, como ya venía
haciendo desde antes, llevó a Bowie a actuar en medio de una escenografía
para la ocasión representando la ciudad llamada Hunger City. Este disco se
inspiró en la novela de George Orwell 1984.
Durante 1975 sale a la luz pública el álbum
Young Americans, en cuya portada Bowie nuevamente representa una
imagen andrógina, emulando a la actriz Katherine Hepburn en su rol de Sylvia
Scarlett en la película del mismo nombre, imagen igualmente andrógina. Este
disco, además, cuenta con la colaboración de John Lennon en el tema
"Fame", que tendría una nueva versión llamada "Fame '90".
En 1976 aparece el disco Station to
Station. Allrededor de ets época es que Bowie da origen a un nuevo
personaje, uno de los más cnocidos suyos: The Thin White Duke, o El Delgado
Duque Blanco. Por sta época Bowie se declaró admirador de Adolf Hitler y del
filósofo alemán Friedrich Nietzsche. Del mismo modo, la creación del
personaje del Duque estaría inspirado en la figura del Duce Benito Mussolini.
Durante 1977-1979 se produce lo que se
denomina como la Trilogía con el ex Roxy Music Brian Eno: los discos Heroes,
Low y Lodger. También se denomina esta época como la etapa
berlinesa de Bowie, por cuanto por estos años, agotado de los excesos con las
drogas, Bowie viaja hasta Alemania para obtener un poco de descanso.
En 1980, en tanto, aparece el disco Scary
Monsters, el cual contiene los temas "Fashion" y "Ashes to
ashes". Como era de esperarse, muchos de sus fans reniegan de él ahora
que se volvía más pop y bailable. Durante los 80s le siguieron discos como Let's
Dance (de 1983, con temas como "China Girl" y el que le da
título al disco), Tonight (1984), Never Let Me Down (1987),
etc.
Durante los años '90, en tanto, el Camaleón
vuelve a acomodarse a los nuevos escenarios y estilos musicales, como
precursor o apoyándolos. Ejemplo de ello sontemas como el ya nombrado
"Fame '90", "Real Cool World" (de la película
protagonizada por Brad Pitt y Kim Bassinger llamada precisamente Cool
World), "Jump they say" o "Little Wonder", todos de
sonidos notoriamente electrónicos. Discos de estos años: Black Tie, White
Noise, 1. Outside, The
Buddha of Suburbia, Earthling, y el más reciente: Hours
(1999).
Pero, como ya se ha dicho, además de ser un
cantante o músico, Bowi también ha incursionado en otras labores y artes,
cono lo que ha aprovechado de nutrir y complementar sus distintas facetas e
intereses. Entre las películas que ha participado se pueden nombrar: The
Man who fell to Earth o El Hombre que cayó a la Tierra, en donde
representa el rol de un hombre del espacio; Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence,
una película "de guerra", Laberinto, en donde es el Rey de
los Duendes; The Hunger, en el rol de un vampiro que es vulnerable de
perder su inmortalidad; La Última Tentación de Cristo, en el rol de
Pilatos y Basquiat, en la que encarna el rol de Andy Warhol, con quien
tuvo una gran cercanía.
Bowie se ha casado dos veces: primero con
Angie, con quien tuvo un hijo de nombre Zowie y que actualmente sería médico;
la segunda vez, con la modelo Iman, con quien también ha tenido un hijo.
Pero, como se sabe, durante los '70s incluso él mismo llegó a declararse gay
e incluso bisexual a la revista Melody Maker como maniobras publicitarias
para promocionar sus discos. Lou Reed y Mick Jagger habrían sido sus amantes.

Y según tengo entendido, como otro dato
importante, cabría señalar que Bowie habría sido budista. ¿Lo será todavía?
In English David Robert Jones is the true name of David Bowie. He
named himself this way not to be called like another artist with his same
name. Bowie was born on January, 8, 1947 in England.
Thanks his brother Terry, David began feeling a special
approach for the jazz music, then he'd like to be a saxo player. Besides, as
we all know, Bowie also has worked as an actor and even a mime, aspects which
have beeen useful for his shows as a singer. In the same way, he studied Art
and Publicity at the University.
As we all know, Bowie is called "The White
Duke", like one of his characters, but he's also called "The
Chameleon", what's obvious if one looks at his different looks according
each era and the aesthetic and creative needs in his own works. So, for
example, he's been a androgyne ET (Ziggy Stardust), a junkie rocker (Aladdin
Sane) or even the King of the Goblins in the film called Labyrinth
(1986).
The first album was called David Bowie in the 1968. But
already in 1970, with the edition of the album The Man who sold the world,
we can see him in the cover with his hair a little long, semi-laying on a
couch or so and with a female dress, which it'd be only a show of what would
come later, with his characters, in which he flirts always with the sexual
indefinition and it'd raise him as the icon of the Glam rock era in the 70s.
In 1969 appears his album Space Oddity (which
first was entitled Man of words, man of music), with its concept
created taken from the idea of the film by Kubrick 2001 and of course
the fact of the man on the moon that same year. The "hymn" track of
this album is, obviously, "Space Oddity", talking about an
astronauta who's lost in the space.
In 1971 appears the album Hunky Dory and the next
year the album entitled Ziggy Stardust (orginally The raise and
fall of Ziggy Stardust and the spiders from Mars). In 1972, besides, he
produced the album Transformer of Lou Reed, ex member of the band
Velvet Underground, and which contains the song "Perfect Day". In
the same way, Bowie helped Iggy Pop in the edition of his album The Idiot.
Doubtless, Bowie, The Velvet Underground or Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and the glam
rock in general went a lot ahead of what would come later in the aesthetics
and artistic.
In 1973 appears the album Pinups. In 1974, this
time, appears the album Diamond Dogs, which, as before, made Bowie to
act with a staging representing the Hunger City. This record was inspired by
the novel 1984 written by George Orwell.
During 1975 appears the album Young Americans,
where Bowie in the cover again represents an androgynous image, emulating the
actress Katherine Hepburn in the role of Sylvia Scarlett in the film of the
same name, with an androgynous image, too. This album, besides, has the

In 1976 is the album Station to Station. Around

character, The Duke, was inspired by the figure of Il Duce Benito Mussolini.
During 1977-1979 is the so called trilogy with the ex

these albums in Germany, due to the excessive past life (drugs) and his need

During the 90s, meanwhile, the Chameleon again goes
according the new times and musical styles, as a precursor or supporting
them. Example of this are songs like "Fame '90", "Real Cool
World" (from the film with Brad Pitt and Kim Bassinger called Cool
World), "Jump they say" or "Little wonder", all of
them with sounds obviously electronic. Albums in the 90s: Black Tie, White
Noise , 1. Outside, The Buddha of Suburbia, Earthling
and the last: Hours (1999).
But, besides being a singer, Bowie has been a more
integral artist: musician, mime, actor, painter. Examples of the films in
which he has acted are: The man who fell to Earth, in which he's a
spaceman; Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, a war film; Labyrinth,
a fantasy film, in where he's the Goblins King; The Hunger, in the
role of a a vampire vulnerable of losing his immortality; The Last
Temptation of Christ, in the role of Pilatus and Basquiat, in the
role of his friend Andy Warhol.
Bowie has got married two times: First with Angie, with
whom he has a son called Zowie, and whom actually would be a doctor; the
second, with the model Iman, with whom he also has a son. But, as it's known,
during the 70s he even declared to be gay and even a bisexual to the Melody Maker
magazine, as marketing promoting his works. So, Lou Reed and Mick Jagger,
it's said, were his lovers.
