In their efforts to wreak original variations on the vampire theme, the writers represented in this collection have imagined ingenious new means of vampire disposal, envisioned vampires interfacing with computers and piloting time machines, and even proposed more than a few reasons why people might want to be a vampire -- or at least have one as a close friend. Not that there aren't a few traditional vampires lurking between these covers.

A Dozen Black Roses

Author: Nancy Collins
Publisher: White Wolf Publishing Inc.
Publishing Date: November 1997
ISBN-10: 1565048733; ISBN-13: 978-1-56504-873-7; 276 pages

Brief commentary from the author Nancy A. Collins, June 23, 1998 :

When I was asked to write a ''cross-over'' novel between White Wolf's World of Darkness Vampire: The Masquerade RPG and my punk vampire/vampire-slayer character Sonja Blue, I tried my best to blend the two as seamlessly as possible. (And, if it is any help to my fans, the events chronicled in ''...Roses'' are ''out of continuity'' --like those old comic stories where Superman's robot double married a mermaid in a wheelchair.) In any case, I did my best to make it easy for those readers unfamiliar with my work or the Vampire RPG to pick up the book and (hopefully) get a good read out of it.

Of course it doesn't hurt that this man has a delicious-looking neck. What kind of cold-blooded vampire woman could resist a bite of that?

Dr. Gregory Hewitt recovers from the shock of waking up in a stranger's bedroom pretty quickly-once he sees a gorgeous woman about to treat him to a wild night of passion. But is it possible for the good doctor to find true love with a vampire vixen, or will he be just a good meal? That's a question Dr. Greg might be willing to sink his teeth into . . . if he can just get Lissianna to bite.

Blood Is Not Enough: 17 Stories of Vampirism

Editor : Ellen Datlow
Publisher : GRAFTON BOOKS
Publishing Date : 1990
ISBN-10: 0586208526; ISBN-13: 978-0586208526; 416 pages

Editorial Review (from Pub. Weekly) :

Datlow, the fiction editor of Omni , has put together an excellent collection whose premise is that some vampires have a taste for sustenance a bit less substantial than bloodone might call it the "life force." The two poems and 15 stories, all but seven of which are original to his collection, concern these subtler, less stylized, dangerous creatures. Dan Simmons's novella, "Carrion Comfort," depicts vampires as youthful but ancient decadents playing life-and-death games with mere mortals for amusement. Fritz Leiber's "The Girl with the Hungry Eyes" tells of a beautiful woman whose nighttime pick-ups are found dead the next day, and of the down-and-out photographer who falls under her spell. The standout of the book, however, is Scott Baker's "Varicose Worms," an amazingly inventive tale of a psychiatrist who leads an underground life and is also a shamanimmensely powerful, manipulative, corrupt. When he is challenged by unseen adversaries the story takes bizarre and thrilling turns. There are also excellent stories by Sharon Farber, Gahan Wilson, Pat Cadigan and Tanith Lee.

Organized into six categories--The Classic Adventure Tale, The Psychic Vampire, The Science Fiction Vampire, The Non-Human Vampire, The Comic Vampire, and The Heroic Vampire--the collection illustrates how the vampire's ability to draw into itself such a richness of symbolic meanings may account for the enduring appeal of the literature written about it. Bloody Countess: The Atrocities of Erzsebet Bathory, The

Author : Valentine Penrose; Alexander Trocchi (Translator)
Publisher : Creation Pub Group
Publishing Date : September 2000
ISBN-10: 1840680563; ISBN-13:978-1-84068-056-0; 102 pages

Description (from Amazon) :

The true story of a 17th century Hungarian Countess who bathed in the blood of girls... Descended from one of the most ancient aristocratic families of Europe, Erzsébet Báthory bore the psychotic aberrations of centuries of intermarriage. From adolescence she indulged in sadistic lesbian fantasies, where only the spilling of a woman's blood could satisfy her urges. By middle age, she had regressed to a mirror-fixated state of pathalogical necro-sadism involving witchcraft, torture, blood-drinking, cannibalism and, inevitably wholescale slaughter. These years witnessed a reign of cruelty, unsurpassed in the annals of mass' murder, with the Countess' depredations on the virgin girls of the Carpathians leading to some 650 deaths. Her many castles were equipped with chambers where she would hideously torture and mutilate her victims, becoming a murder factory where hundreds of girls were killed and processed for the ultimate, youth-giving ritual: the bath of blood. The Bloody Countess is Valentine Penrose's disturbing case history of a female psychopath, a chillingly lyrical account beautifully translated by Alexander Trocchi, which has an unequalled power to evoke the decadent melancholy of doomed, delinquent aristocracy in a dark age of superstition.
