It started very slowly, with the comedies in the mid-sixties. The Addams Family had a ''vamp'' who didn't come from a grave but sure was at ease in a cemetary (she had her own in the backyard), and The Munster, with a good housewife, who was incidentally the daughter of a vampire and slept with a lily kept between folded hands on her bosom, a practice that was done for burial before modern times.
Then, television took a break, and came back, with a whole new category: the Females with fangs.
Vampire Series
Forever Knight
Canada - 1989
A female Vampire to make a weekly appearance was in Forever Knight, a series about a male vampire cop making the night shift in Toronto, Canada. Jeannette, played by the Canadian actress Deborah Duchênes, is the blood-sister of Nick Knight. She's also a bar owner, the Raven, in downtown Toronto, where all vampires meet to have... a drink. Jeannette is a sexy dark lady with fangs and glowing yellow eyes when she's in ''Vampire mode''. When she's not, she only looks a bit... gothic, which blends her in with her surroundings.
Jeannette's blood-grand-mother is Divia, a devious little kid from Roman time, saved from death by a vampire male doctor. This young lady makes only very short appearances in the serie, in flashbacks to Pompei. Sadly, the character wasn't more developed. for she was really interesting, mischievous and self-centered as many children her age. Nothing was said about her demise, so, if the show rekindles from its own ashes (many fan-clubs are pressing for a return), maybe we'll see more of Divia... and Jeannette.
Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
USA - 1997/2003
The vampires from the series "'Buffy, the Vampire Slayer"', have more than glowing eyes and fangs when they are in "'vampiric mode"'. This kind of vampires rely more on the fear it inspires than on a potential sex-appeal. The demon-like look comes only when needed, then the vampire changes back to her "'human"' facade. When staked, from the front or the back -- but necessarily through the heart -- they burst into dust particles, leaving no more residue than a few flakes. This less offensive dusty death may be related to the fact that the whole series is centered on a teen audience rather than for adults, and leaving corpses lying around isn't quite politically correct for the good guys and gals of the series.
Kindred, The Embraced
USA - 1996
In 1996, a made-for-television serie was presented, based on the role-playing game ''Vampire, The Masquerade''. It was indeed called: "'Kindred, The Embraced"', using the same terminology as the well-known game. The series is about the ups and downs of different races of vampires and their interrelations with humans. They deal money as well as lives, making the whole serie no more than a corporate drama with a little more... bite. The leading role goes to a male vampire and the worst bad guys have no female allies. The fangy women are not numerous and they are very discreet. Lillie, a silvered eyes vampire, is no more than a sun-shy female corporate in a very macho Los Angeles surroundings.
Dracula, the Series
USA - 1990
There are much more female vampires in "'Dracula, the Series"' as in any other recent shows. One of the cutest is without doubt Sophie Meternick, seen as a vampire in the episode ''Bad Blood''. There are many more, like Eileen, bitten in the episode "'Damsel in Distress"', Lana Zorro seen in the episode "'Mind over Matter"', the art dealer and stealer Julia Heisenberg in "'Get A Job"', the Contessa Delores de Suarez y Suarez in "'A little Nightmare Music"'. Sadly, the episodes have a tendency to become quite far-fetched, if you consider how many humans get the bite, and how many vampires are blasted away from week to week. Time travel, laser guns, and zombie servants make the whole series look a little like a nightmarish ''Dark Shadows'' (not that this old series was that good to begin with, remember it was a soap opera, airing during daytime hours, not the usual midnight horror movie).
Visiting Vampires
The Adventures of Superboy
USA - 1989/90
This series focuses on Clark Kent's early years as Superboy and his adventures in and outside Smallville. Superboy was often joined in his adventures by his super powered dog Krypto and his friend Lana Lang.
#24 - Succubus - (1989)
Writer: Fred Frieberger
Director: David Nutter
A sexy romance novelist is in fact a succubi, a centuries-old vampire-like creature who drains life essence out of her victims to sustain her own un-life. She captures Lana and T.J. and holds them hostage to lure Superboy to her lair, planning to suck him dry and thus keep herself youthful forever.
#30 - Young Dracula - (1989)
Writers: Ilya Salkind and Carey Bates
Director: David Nutter
Dr. Byron Shelley is a visiting intern by day and a vampire by night. He is using his knowledge of modern medicine to find a cure for the dreaded curse, and at the same time, he is being stalked by and older, more powerful vampire who wishes Shelley to remain among the unliving creatures. There's no female vampire in this episode, but the male vampire comes back in ep. #42 and then, there's one.
#42 - Run Dracula, Run - (1990)
Writers: Ilya Salkind and Cary Bates
Director: Richard J. Lewis
Dr. Byron Shelley, who was helped by Superboy to develop a drug that would keep his alter-ego of a vampire under control, is jumped by two thugs and his anti-vampire serum is stolen, forcing him to revert back to the evil dark ways of his ancestors. Lana Lang (played by Stacy Haiduk) receives a call from Byron where he pleads for help, and asks her to send Superboy before he changes into a vampire and kills again. Not knowing where Superboy is, Lana leaves to help him on her own, but the vampire attacks her, turning Lana into a vampire. She uses her new evil powers to turn Superboy into a vampire as well, and they both team up with Shelley, who plans to sneak out of the country with his newly converted vampires.
Xena, Warrior Princess
New Zealand - 1996
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Last but not least, I have to mention one episode from the series ''Xena: Warrior Princess''. In 1996, the episode airing on the Halloween week was an homage to female vampires in itself. ''Girls Just Wanna Have Fun'' has no male vampires. The head master of the vampiric harem is a Satan look-alike demon, much like the one in the movie ''Legend''. The girls, named ''Bacchae'' can turn themselves into wolves, at will, to hunt down men for their blood. They also kidnap girls from neighbouring villages, forcing them to join their ranks of immortals. These Vampires strike with more fangs than the average two we're accustomed to, hiss like cats, and sport long black nails, quite like claws.
This episode rated well above the average, because of a very controversial sexy biting sequence which lasted a full 2 minutes... It's evident both girls are having fun at what they're doing (isn't it the title of the episode?).
MY REVIEW: But, what's the problem? A vampire has the right to enjoy a meal like everybody else, and being ''turned'' into a Vampire shouldn't be too painful... after the first bone-cracking bite, that is (What a sound effect THAT was!). Of course, with six fangs instead of two, it's bound to ''sound'' different. The yellow eyes, as in ''Forever Knight'', add a bit of ''animal touch'' to the Bacchae when in human form. Their wolf form has natural-looking wolf eyes.
Poltergeist, the Legacy
Canada, USA - 1996
Darkness Falls Season 2, episode 1 Light of Day Season 2, episode 2
In New Orleans, Alex comes back to her granny's house, find long lost friends and has a different view on life and death. The woman she met was a vampire and she bit her. Alex comes back to the Legacy's stronghold with a fever and bad dreams. According to Derek, she can't become a full-fledge vampire unless she has killed a human. THe female vampire is killed at the end of the first episode, but the male vampire 'lives on' for the second one.
MY REVIEW: The story is as old as Bram's Stoker's, and you feel like you've seen it before. I saw the first ep. because I had seen the vampiress in the preview the week before, but one full hour was already too long. I didn't see the second part of the story. Furthermore, The Legacy isn't one of my favourite shows, for obvious reasons.
X Files
USA, Canada - 1993
3
Mulder spends a night with a woman who pretends to be a vampire. Before that, a young man pretending to be one was sent to jail and asked not to be put in a cell with a window. At dawn, he died from sun burns.
MY REVIEW: It was a nice twist to an old story, with details left untouched so we can make our own decision to that question : was she or wasn't she?
Moonlight
USA - 2007
The Ringer
Coraline is the vampire wife of the main character Mick St. John, bit him 60 years ago on their wedding night. Coraline is played by Shannyn Sossamon.
MY REVIEW: Sorry but after the first half of the first episode, I zapped to another show.
