Button Functions & Basic Gameplay for Super Mario RPG

Thanks to PfcDogg and Chris Johnson for some info. Also note that I've made this printable now...It's lost most of the images, but...so it goes.

Basic RPG Stuff

- Hit Points, The life in the game. When your HP level reaches 0, then that character is dead. Different characters start out with different HP.

FP () - Flower Points, the magic in the game. You need certain amounts of FP's to use certain magics. You start out with 10 total, and can get up to 99.,
Experience Points () - What you gain by defeating enemies. Basically, it is power, as the picture shows.
Experience Level () - judged by how many Exp. points you have, basically, it's your level of strength. There are 30 experience levels in the game.
Battle Mode- basically when you fight enemies. Unlike some games, where you fight enemies on the same screen that regular game play occurs, RPGs usually have 2 screens. Super Mario RPG, however, has three.
1. The Map screen- basically how you get from place to place.
2. The Stage screen- this is where all the fun is, this is the screen in which you talk to people, explore the world, and find hidden treasure boxes.
3. The Battle screen(Battle Mode)- where you fight enemies, and gain experience points.

Button Functions

Any time...

Select+Start+L+R will restart the game without hitting the "reset" button on the control deck.

During Battle...

Control Pad - used to select the enemy you want to attack, or the ally you want to heal.

A - used for attack. Choose the enemy you want to attack using the control pad, and hit "A" again to attack. Will not work if you are a scarecrow or mushroom.

B - used to either Run or for defense. To select one of these, use the control pad to choose it, and hit "B". Use this button if you feel outnumbered or are low on HP. You can't use it if you are a mushroom, though.

X - used for using items. If you are low on magic(flower points), for example, you can hit this button and see what items you have. If you have a Honey, Maple, or Royal Syrup, who recover magic (Flower) points, then you can use them during battle to recover your (what else?) magic. You can also use bombs during battle like this. To choose an item, select it with control pad and hit "X". This button won't work if you are a scarecrow or a mushroom.

Y - used when you want to summon a magic power. Magic can really help if you are outnumbered, or are very weak compared to the enemy you are fighting. You must have a certain amount of FP's (Flower Points, the magic in this game), to use a certain magic. The amount of FP's needed is indicated in the top-left corner of the box that is used to show what magics you have. To use any magic, choose the one you want with the control pad, and hit "Y" to use it. Will not work if you are a mushroom.

(Start, Select, L, or R are not used in battle individually, however the restart code will still work.)

On the map screen...

A - No function.

B - used to jump.

X - used to call up sub-screen.

Y - when held, use this to run.

Control Pad - In this game, control can be a little difficult. Up-right diagonal is used to move straight up, down-left diagonal is used to make you go straight down, up-left diagonal is used to move left, and down-right diagonal is used to move right.

Moleville Mountain

A or Y- used to make the cart slow down.

B - Used to make the cart jump.

X - Use mushrooms to accelerate with this button.

Start - used to pause the game.

Control Pad - used to turn corners.

Beetle Mania

A, Y, and B - used to shoot stars/recover when hit.

Start - used to pause. This is REALLY helpful when you're going for a record...I tell ya, 3 hours of hitting the same buttons will make you REAL tired REAL quick~

Mushroom Derby (Yoshi's Island race)

A and B - hit in order (A,B,A,B) fast to speed Yoshi up. Yoshi will jump if you hit the same button twice in a row.

Y - use a cookie and gain speed.

Midas River

B or A - Swim up (Or at least try to). Waterfall part only.

B or A - Jump. In Barrel Part only.
