Pennsylvania Child support laws are routinely and unjustly brutalizing the non-custodial parent. The new law passed in April of 1999, states that state can take up to and over 50% of the non-custodial parent's (ncp) wage as long as they are left with $550 a month. They in fact took more than half my pay and left me with less than $550 a month to live on. Now I am not a deadbeat parent, although I have 4 children I am only paying for two and I can't even keep my head above water. My debts get deeper by the month. The amount of child support requested left me unable to keep my small apartment. I have never left my children of my own volition. I endeavor to have as much positive contact with them as possible. I am not trying to get out of paying support. I am trying to get the courts to see how this state imposed situation, almost tore us completely apart. They say they are attempting to give the child the same standard of living as the "average" child growing up. We all know what the word 'average' means. They take the wealthy children as well as the poverty children. That formulae may work in other counties but here in Montgomery County with the Main Line, King of Prussia, Ft Washington, it obliterates those of us on hourly wages. I can not compete with the bank managers and CEO's in this county.
I have not spoken of my race, religion or gender as of yet. I don't think it matters. This is happening to all parents and worst of all to over 80% of our children.
