Note: They were given lands by Philipse and he purchased additional land, some of which is today's Van Cortland Park (12,000 acres) in the Bronx, NYC, which include the Van Cortland Mansion, built by his son. It was bought by the City of NY in 1899 and is open to the public. It was here, during the American Revolution, that the papers of the NYC government were hidden. He dammed Tibbet's Brook for a mill pond, and built a sawmill and a grist mill. Bought 2 acres of salt meadow on Harlem side of Spuyten Duyvel, from Jacques Tourneur, Sep 28, 1705 which remained in the family 168 years. He was a Mayor of NYC, 1677 and a prominent merchant in NYC. He continued his father's trading and shipping ventures and was active in the provisioning trade with the West Indies and other mainland colonies. Most of his trade was with Jamaica, Curacao, and Barbados, but also included Surinam, Madiera, Amsterdam and London.
