Johann Wagner was Mayor of Franzfeld in 1820. He was 33 yrs old when He and a friend where allowed to return home to Alsace. Not many where allowed to return home to Germany. They both had been left an inheritance. Johann went to Neeweiler Germany and his friend (George Heisler) to his home. They started out on May 19th. It took 75 days one way and they stayed one month. They returned leaving Germany at the end of August and arrived in Franzfeld On Nov 21st. This ended taking 5 months to travel. (From Paradise on the Steppe-Joseph Height-pg 112)
May 19, 1820-The mayor, Johannes Wagner, and George Heisler from Franzfeld left for Germany on the 18th of May to get their property from there. On the 21 November they both returned safely. (Keller vol 1 pg 233)

Franzfeld was entirely Catholic. Mennonites where resettled ASAP.
Note 2: Johannes Wagner (deputy district leader) and Dr. Otto Broneske ( district leader from Tarutino) helped with the fate of Bessarabian Germans in both villages.
