He raised a company of militia and became captain in the Loyal Volunteers of the City of New York on 1 November 1777. He was promoted to major of that corps on 26 July 1780, the commission was back-dated to 1 November 1777.

Colonel married Catherine JOHNSTONE, daughter of Andrew JOHNSTONE and Catherine VAN CORTLAND, on 10 Oct 1761. (Catherine JOHNSTONE was born about 1742.)
