He was a "joiner" which meant he was a cabinet maker. Apparently he made very fancy furniture. Richard came on the ship called the Phillip. He came with Governor Carteret in 1664 to Elizabeth Town (now Elizabeth), Union County, New Jersey. On the same ship was a girl named Susanna Poulain. She was born in St Germain- En-laye Seine-Et-oise, France. She was brought as a maid for Governor Carteret's wife, who want 5 french maids. The Carteret's spoke french as did all of the inhabitants of the Isle of Jersey even to this day. Shortly after ariving in the new world, Mr. DeHart of New York City apparently saw his work and made a deal with Governor Carteret to let his work for DeHart. Within two years we find Richard owning land in Essex County, New Jersey. He also has some responsibilities for the overseeing of Governor Carteret's business affairs as is shown by correspondence from the Governor. Carolynn Crawford
