Ross, Thomas Ben Had a wife & five children--P.L. 2d, 1786. quote from Some Glengarry Ross' - pages 112 - 113 Thomas Ban Ross is another whose career may well have paralleled that of Thomas Taylor Ross. Certainly Thomas Ban Ross had been in the Kings Royal Regiment of New York and settled in Lancaster Township on the lot next to Thomas Taylor Ross. His tombstone in the old Presbyterian Cemetery in South Lancaster indicates that Thomas Ban Ross was a native of the parish of Greigh, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, that he was born in 1729 and died in 1806 and that his wife Isabel may have been a Munro. Although I have not been able to locate what is known as the parish of Greigh, Thomas Taylor Ross has been identified as being a native of Glencalvie, a now barren empty land some distance in from Kincadine, Rosshire located in northern Rosshire close to the border of Sutherland. There is a presumption that since Thomas Taylor and Thomas Bann Ross had been together in Frasers Highlanders and at, the Mohawk valley and then as members of the Kings Royal regiment of New York and finally as neighbours in Lancaster Township that they had known each other in Scotland and may have been related. Assuming that the Parish of Greigh was just across the border from Glencalvie in the County of Sutherland it becomes easier to suggest that an earlier association was likely.

In his History of Lancaster Ewan Ross has quoted a story relating to this family which seems to have been written by one of the members of the family and which I now quote in part:

"Two miles east of Lancaster, about a quarter of a mile south of Highway #2 on land which slopes down to the banks of Lake St Francis stood one of the oldest homesteads in Glengarry. It is now in Upper Canada Village.

The house, a two story dwelling, was built in 1734 by Thomas Ban Ross, a United Empire Loyalist. The building is constructed of hand hewn pine logs. The exterior is covered by frame lumber. Few repairs have been necessary owing to the painstaking work which went into the original building.

Thomas Ban Ross first came to Canada with the 91st Highland Regiment. He fought in the Battle of Quebec in 1759, later returning to his home in Sutherlandshire, Scotland, where he married Isabel Ross.

Several years later Mr and Mrs Ross sailed for America, where they settled in the Mohawk Valley." With the advent of the American Revolutionary war Thomas joined with many of the group who had come from Scotland to become members of the Kings Royal Regiment of New York. The Muster roll of the regiment indicates that he joined on May 22, 1780 and was five feet three inches in height. Thomas served with the regiment for the remainder of the war years and on disbandment in 1784 came to Glengarry to settle in what later became known as Lancaster Township on the farm next to Thomas Taylor Ross

Thomas Ban and Isabel Ross had a family of at least five namely Nancy, Donald, Nellie, Thomas and Christie. Descendants of this family may still be found in the Lancaster area and in fact the farm remained in the hands of descendants of Thomas Ban through five generations the last family member to live in the old log house being Mrs Clarence Boffin nee Ida Ross.

Donald Ross the oldest son of Thomas Ban and Isabel married Margaret McMartin from Martintown a member of well known family who had come to America from the Killin area of Perthshire Scotland. The marriage took place on June 2,1801 and the event is recorded in marriage register of the Presbyterian Church in Williamstown.

The King's Royal Regiment of New York Also known as Johnson's Greens (amongst other names), this regiment was raised by Sir John Johnson in June of 1776 after his flight from the Mohawk Valley. The rank and file were also refugees from the Mohawk and Schoharie valleys. Johnson, like the Butlers, understood the value of psychological warfare, and raided his former homeland throughout the war. The Royal Yorkers had their baptism under fire at Oriskany. They, like Butler's Rangers, gained a reputation for savagery; a reputation that was promoted by their enemies-their former neighbors
