John McMartin, b. September 21, 1859, Charlottenburgh, Glengarry County Ontario; d. April 12, 1918, Montreal. -Page 312 Harkness Book - Story of Dundas, Glengarry and Stormont Counties: "John McMartin was born in the Township of Charlottenburg, near Martintown, on the 21st day of September, 1859. He was a son of Allen and Catherine (McDonald) McMartin, both descendants of United Empire Loyalists. In 1883, he was superintendent of construction on part of the Canadian Pacific Railway, afterwards engaging in contracting. He and his brother, Duncan, purchased the Larose Gold Mine and afterwards, with N.A. and R. Timmins and D.A. Dunlap, acquired the Hollinger, one of the richest gold mines in Canada. Each of them thus became many times a millionaire. He came to Cornwall in 1903, purchasing the R.R. McLannan property on the corner of 2nd and Sydney Streets, which he enlarged and improved, and which after his death was given to the Roman Catholic Church, becoming the Nazareth Orphanage. In 1917, he moved to Montreal, where he died on the 12th of April, 1918. He was a Liberal and a Roman Catholic while his brother, Duncan, was a Conservative and a Presbyterian."
