John McMartin: Loyalist - Came to America in1773 on the Pearl. Tryon County New York Province, Settled in 1775 on Sir John Johnson's land and remained there until 1780 when he came to Canada and was the remainder of the war in the Engineers Dept. Served in the Kings Royal Regiment of NY as a Sergeant in Kings Works. John McMartin founded the Big John, Big Malcolm, and Big Allan Family. United Empire Loyalists Proceedings of 1787: Loyalist Commissioners Montreal 1787-8, Vol XII - A new Claim, #309, Evidence on the claim of John McMartin, Late of Tryon County, N.Y. Province Page 385, Claimt. Sworn, Says he was a Sorel in 1783 and sent claim to Lt. McMartin to forward to England. He is a native of Scotland and came to America in 1773. In 1775 he settled on Sir John Johnson's lands and remained there until 1780, when he came to Canada and was the remainder of the war in the Engineers Dept. He had 9 acres cleared and had built a house and barn. He had a horse, 6 cows, 2 heifers, 8 sheep and 10 hogs. Furniture and Grain and farming utensils. From History of Martintown: R.C.M. Grant, It is said that the MacMartin families were with a party which was pursued by hostile Indians and that they were showered with arrows as they embarked in row-boats to cross the St. Lawrence. Many of the other families had adventures as difficult and stirring times as the Cameron's, Grants, and MacMartin's. Total party of one man, one woman, one male over 10, one female over 10 and one male under 10 (only head of party, John McMartin, is named.) Event: i131: Lists of Loyalists victualled at New Johnstown, Township No. 1, between 25th and 31st August 1786
