Beginners Class
Beginner's Class - Advancing to Regular Class
The Beginner's Class is not designed to teach someone Karate, or even Self Defense. It is designed to give someone a familiarity with the Martial Arts, and a background of Bushi Kai. That is the most that we can hope to do in a four-week period. This class will consist of both Youth and Adults, with the only exception being 5, 6 and 7 year old children who will start in the Tiger Cubs class.
Once the beginner can demonstrate a working knowledge of the basics, they can advance to the regular class. This can take more than 4 weeks, depending on the proficiency, maturity and attitudes of the new Student. This class is designed to allow a new Student the opportunity to decide if they want to continue in the Martial Arts by making them familiar with the basic Stances, Kicks and Punches.
The Class consists of 4 basic sessions, following a basic outline of:
#1 - History and Basic Stances
#2 - Punches and Blocks
#3 - Kicks and Combinations
#4 - Review and Self Defense
A Student may start at any time during the month, as this class is on a 4 week cycle. If the student comes in on the 2nd class, and learns about Punches and Blocks, he will then take #3 followed by #4 and end with Class #1.
A small amount of Self Defense will be taught throughout each week. This is in hope that if the Student does not decide to stay with the program that they will leave with some knowledge that might be of use to them in a self defense situation.
The only other requirement for advancing to the regular class is that the student must buy and wear a White Uniform (gi) to the regular class, and purchase a Student Manual prior to their first promotion.
Bushi Kai Karate
Beginner's Class
The following is a list of terminology and techniques with which you need to become familiar. Once you have a working knowledge of these areas and the Dojo Etiquette you should be able to progress past the Beginners Class with no trouble. Progression however, is not based solely on the learning of terms, or on attending the basic four weeks. Advancement is also based on attitude, maturity and physical progression. Everyone has different learning speeds, so don't worry about the timing… just enjoy the class and work hard and you will move up in no time!

Dojo Etiquette
Be familiar with Dojo Etiquette:
[ Always bow when entering or leaving the Dojo.
[ Always bow to a Black Belt.
[ Always bow to a Black Belt when told to do something, before
moving to do it.
[ Always bow to Advanced Ranks - (Green, Purple, Brown).
[ Always respond to commands quickly.
[ Always answer with a clear, audible answer to questions.
[ Always use correct responses - "Yes Sir or No Sir" or "Yes
Ma'am or No Ma'am".
[ Always be polite, and show respect.
[ Always follow the Golden Rule in class - "Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you"…. Remember in here, you are
family, and we take care of each other.
[ Always give your maximum effort, never "coast" or "be lazy".
[ Always refer to Mr. Troxell as Sensei, or Mr. Troxell. Ranking
Belts are not to be called by first name in class; they are called
Mr. or Mrs. as well.
[ Never Horseplay.
[ Never turn your back to a Black Belt. Back away at least 3 steps
before turning.
[ Never move in a Ready Stance without command.
[ Never speak out in class inappropriately.
[ Never show Karate Techniques to anyone outside of class.
[ Never be a bully. If you are found to be using Karate Techniques
in a "bullying" manner, you will be dismissed from class, there
are NO SECOND CHANCES.
[ Never let your Obi, (Belt) rest on the floor.
[ Never wash your Obi after the first time you wear it.
[ Never show disrespect to your instructors or to your Martial Art.
There are other rules, and you will learn them over time. As you progress you will learn more about Bushi Kai, and Bushido - "The Way of the Warrior". You will learn more about our philosophies and our somewhat eclectic style of Karate. The Bushi Kai Logo is a starting point: "Bushido - In the Street or in the Ring… the Way is still the same." You have selected a school that has trained both State and National Karate Champions, but you have chosen something much more than that. You picked a school where everyone looks at everyone else in the Dojo as a friend and family. Karate is not all hard work and discipline; it can be fun as well. You can build relationships in Karate that will last you a lifetime. Don't get me wrong though, it's not all fun, and it is not easy… nationwide only 1 in 800 that start in Karate stay with it and make it to the rank of Black Belt. If you work hard, and really want it, you can become one. If something is worth having, it's worth working for. The Bible in Matthew 7:14 says concerning the way to Heaven… "strait is the gate and narrow the way which leadeth into life, and few there be that find it".
We hope you stay with us, and achieve your goals in the Martial Arts.
Welcome to Bushi Kai Karate
