Monte R. Troxell, Karate instructor for the Henry County YMCA has been promoted to 7th Degree Black Belt.  This promotion is from a review board consisting of highly respected Black Belts throughout the country.
The board included such notables as Aaron Banks, 10th Degree Black Belt from New York and Dr. Jim Thomas, a 10th Degree Black Belt from Ohio.

Mr. Troxell will now have the title of Shihan, which signifies a “Master” of the art, and the head of his Association.  Bushi Kai Martial Arts is taught at the YMCA in New Castle, as well as at a satellite school under Sensei Daniel New.

Mr. Troxell started in the Martial Arts in 1974, and along with his 7th Degree ranking holds a Brown Belt in Ju Jitsu, as well as rank belts in Goju Ryu, American Tae Kwon Do, Korean Tae Kwon Do, Judo and Taiho Jutsu (Police Defensive Tactics).

Shihan Troxell is an ex-police officer who started with the Henry County Sheriff’s Dept. While there, he and ex-Sheriff Harold Griffen became the first two K-9 officers in Henry County.  Troxell left Law Enforcement as a Lieutenant and Shift Commander for the Baylor University Medical Center Campus Police in Dallas Texas.  During his time in Law Enforcement he was a certified Police Defensive Tactics Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Nightstick Instructor, Kubotan (mini baton) Instructor and PR-24 (side handle baton) Instructor.  Shihan Troxell was also a Certified Breathalyzer operator.  Mr. Troxell was invited and attended the 6th Annual International Symposium on Terrorism in Dallas.  In addition, Troxell was certified as an EMT and ambulance driver in both Indiana and Texas.

Troxell started his Martial Arts career at the New Castle YMCA, and is proud to continue his association with that organization by conducting his classes there.  Troxell is assisted at the YMCA by Sensei Dudley Hellard, 3rd Degree Black Belt.

The Bushi Kai school has been very successful at the YMCA.  In the Sport Karate program the school placed 4th in the state of Indiana and 6th in the USA for the 2001 tournament year.  Over the years, Bushi Kai Martial Arts has produced numerous State and National Sport Karate Champions.  

Under Shihan Troxell the YMCA  offers a comprehensive program including,
Sport Karate, Self Defense, Self Defense for Women, Cardio Kickboxing, Self Defense for Children and Kickboxing.
