After a long and dissapointing break due to the first round playoff loss, Lynch news is back. The Bucs signed Brad Johnson yesterday, an excellent athlete and competitor. Here is what Lynch had to say about Johnson joining the squad :
"I am very excited to have Brad as a part of our organization. I have competed against him many times and I think we are getting one of the better quarterbacks in the league. This is a great day for the entire Buccaneer organization. I think in this league you can't have enough good quarterbacks on your roster, and now we have two accomplished starters on our club."

Some new video clips coming soon of Lynch's massive hits on Marshall Faulk in the memorable Bucs vs Rams Monday Night game. Check back soon.

"Philadelphia took it to us. Early, it seemed we'd come to play really hard. Tackling was crisp. After that turnover, the Eagles scored and then we allowed them to immediately come back and get another touchdown, driving it down our throats.
It hurts that we didn't match their intensity. After that horrible stretch before halftime, we never again tackled up to our standards. We blew assignments. I have trouble believing Philadelphia is a superior team to us, but this time they were much the better."
"It's definitely disappointing. I think we came in with the mind-set that anything less than getting to the Super Bowl and winning it would be disappointing. We obviously fell far from that."

Lynch's 4th Quarter interception (above) was not enough for the Bucs to clinch the NFC Central Division. Lynch finished with 6 tackles, his 3rd interception of the year (5 yd return), and 2 passes defended.
"We made the road a lot tougher on ourselves," Lynch said. "It kind of speaks to this season: By the four-game losing streak, we made it tougher on ourselves but we were able to come back from that. So I believe and I think the guys in this room believe although we made it tougher, our expectations are very much in reach. We just made it a little harder. We're going to have to go on the road and get some wins, but we feel we can do that."
On the near comeback :
"At halftime, I sensed that this was a game where we were going to need some turnovers to get back in it, especially after they went up 14-0 in the third quarter. We started getting them and we did a good job of doing that and giving ourselves a chance."

Lynch is honored HUGE today. The NFL Alumni announced their 19th annual players of the year. The NFL Alumni has named John Lynch the 2000 NFL Defensive Back of the Year. Only 10 current players were chosen, one each at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end, offensive line, defensive line, pass rusher, linebacker, defensive back and special teams. In reality, Lynch should be getting this award for the 3rd straight year, but it took the Alumni awhile to realize it. Here is what Lynch had to say :
"The fact that having the guys you compete against all the time, that's special, because you're actually out there on the field with them. But these guys, they put in their time, and they've got an appreciation for the way the game is supposed to be played. It's nice to be recognized. I always enjoy the opportunity to talk to these guys, because they can give you a lot of perspective. It's important to recognize the history of what you do and you can learn a lot from just talking to them. There?s a lot of people that are deserving, some people in our own secondary, I would think. But it's a great honor."
According to Bucs.com, "The 2000 awardees will be honored at the 19th annual Player of the Year Awards Dinner, to be held Saturday evening, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Hyatt Grand Cypress in Orlando, Fla. The $1,000-per-seat fundraiser is being presented by Forbes magazine. During the awards ceremony, each awardee will receive his Player of the Year award from a Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinee."
If anyone goes, take some pictures.

Keep your fingers crossed for a Monday Night Football halftime show including "John Lynch : Miked for Sound." Although the odds are against it with all the trash talkers out there, Lynch's would probably be one of the easiest to edit for TV!
Lynch was on the Dan Patrick show on Friday. He has a nice long clip talking about everything from his baseball career to the upcoming Rams game. The interview starts at exactly 25 minutes and 54 seconds into the show.

Big news today. Congrats to John Lynch, who today was voted in as a starter for his 3rd Pro Bowl(the most ever by a Tampa Bay defensive back). Other Bucs who will start with Lynch include Alstott, Brooks, Christy, McDaniel and Sapp. Lynch is the only Buccaneer safety ever to appear in the Pro Bowl. It was pretty obvious who the best SS in the league is, so if you are surprised with the outcome say so on the message board and people can make fun of you.
Lynch made a comment to Bucs.com about last years season ending loss to the Rams : "I'm not over it. I think until we get to that next level, any of us that participated in that game won't be."
Also, Dawn -- The "Lynch Mob Princess" , one of Lynch's biggest female fans, has sent some links for some cool Lynch stuff. Here is an audio interview with Lynch after their 41 - 13 win over the Vikes : John Lynch: On beating the Vikings

Gettin hype for the showdown on Monday night? It should be a fun game. I will definitely get some good vid clips from the game.
The St. Petersberg Times has a nice article today on trainer Todd Toriscelli and his crew. Lynch, who probably gets treated the most in his current state, had the following things to say about the staff and playing with pain:
"They are absolutely critical, I can't say enough about Todd and his staff and how they are willing to work. I mean, we get off the plane and they're in there getting guys treatment. I know because I've been there, and they're there meeting you the next morning as soon as you come in."
"They do a great, great job. When it comes down to it, at this time of the year everybody is going to have nicks and bruises, everybody is going to have injuries. You have to find a way to get through them."
"Now, obviously, there are some injuries you just can't play with, and that's understandable, but I think we have had some guys here where, if you asked the doctor, he'll tell you you shouldn't play. But, you still went out there and did it.
I think it says a lot for how much we want to win it."
"I've played for a lot of years and tried to shoot things up, but I'll be the first to tell you that there's no more powerful drug than adrenaline, and that's the truth. There are situations where you see guys not able to walk on Saturday and somehow able to fly around out there on Sunday. It's an amazing thing."

In other Lynch news, it looks like Lynch has his pro Bowl spot locked. Buccaneers.com talks about the team votes :
The Buccaneers formed their player and coach ballots, the other two thirds of the selection process, on Monday, and that involved the entire defensive squad in one room debating the candidates. It?s a fairly organized process that produces one composite ballot, but Lynch suggested that Sapp might have had a strong influence in the room. "Basically, it's who Warren Sapp wants to hang out with in Hawaii," said Lynch of the Bucs' ballot. Lynch was joking, and Sapp, passing in the hallway, got a good laugh out of it. It's likely the two will be trading jibes in Honolulu this February, as Lynch also held a huge lead at his position in the online balloting. But approaching the question from a more serious angle, Lynch did admit that some of the voting was difficult. "Some positions are hard, like tight end," he said. "(Eagle) Chad Lewis has 60 catches, but we haven't played them. We haven't even studied their film with anyone. Some positions, it's not exact science. We put them up there and we vote. We do it up on the board. For the most part, it works pretty good."

December 11, 2000

Lynch played yet another courageous performance Sunday. With his left shoulder in a lot of pain, Lynch made 8 tackles (3 solo, 5 assisted). Lynch had to leave the game when his shoulder slipped out when picked up by a Dolphin guard on a blitz. How many plays was he out for? 1. Lynch's thoughts on the win :
"We were out there playing today to see who was the better defense. I think there was a lot of stuff said prior to this game about how we didn't respect them. It's not true at all. We have a lot of respect for them. They're a great team and they have a great defense. We had a challenge today and, to our credit, we stepped up."

In an inspiring performance, Lynch helped the Bucs dominate the Bills on Sunday. Playing pretty much with 1 side of his upper body, he was still able to make 3 tackles, including a huge hit in the backfield. Lynch was supposed to be out 2-3 weeks when he dislocated his left shoulder early in the game last Sunday in Chicago. It doesnt seem that Lynch has reinjured or made the shoulder worse by playing with it.
Here is what Lynch had to say : "On the second play a guy broke out. I went after him with one hand and (Damien Robinson) came up and cleaned him out. The first (collision) felt all right, so I went after the next one with both hands, and I played that way for the rest of the game." (Sp Times)
Lynch's status on the Bucs injury report should come out sometime today or tomorrow.

November 20, 2000

Lynch forced himself to run off the field after dislocating his left shoulder . (Sptimes photo)

Lynch suffered a dislocated shoulder in Sunday's loss to Chicago, blitzing from the left side and diving for an arm tackle. It was popped back into place on the sidelines, but he was unable to return to the game. Some of Lynch's thought's on the game and his injury :
On having to watch the game :
"It's been a long time since I've done that. It's a helpless feeling. You have confidence in yourself, but I think the guys who were out there made a lot of plays."
On the loss :
"This one was fairly crucial. By no means is it the nail in the coffin or anything like that. We knew coming in how important every game was. You watch the scoreboards and see the teams we're kind of going against won out, so it puts a premium on (every game). We pretty darn near have to win out."

On a brighter note, the MRI results show that Lynch has had no further damage to the joint. "John is very sore," said Dungy. "He had a dislocation. It's going to be a pain-tolerance thing. He's sore and stiff this morning. Right now, I'd say it's pretty questionable whether he'll play this week, but he should definitely be able to play in two weeks."
Knowing Lynch, he will probably be playing in Sunday's game. Check out Bucs.com and SpTimes.com for more info.

November 14, 2000

Lynch played a hell of a game on Sunday. Lynch recorded 7 tackles and was robbed in the first quarter of his first career touchdown. It turns out his own team was at fault, as the offense ran onto the field too soon on Lynch's 86 yard picked up punt return.
Check out the SP Times article : An overeager offense kills Lynch return
Lynch has a pretty severe thigh bruise which caused him to come out in the 4th quarter Sunday. Its likely that it is a reoccuring injury he sustained on a fumble revovery against New England in week 1.

Congrats to Lynch, who's wife Linda gave birth to a 7 pouncd 15 ounce baby girl yesterday.

Former Buc Hardy Nickerson recently commented on the Bucs current losing streak, stating that Tampa Bay doesnt have anyone to handle the leadership. What an idiot comment to make. Here's what Lynch had to say in response :
"I think they've got enough problems to worry about up there," Lynch said of the struggling Jaguars. "They've taken a team that was 14-2, now they're 2-6. So they've got their own issues to deal with. ... Sure, we miss Hardy, primarily what we miss are his 13 years experience on the field and that he is a good friend."

October 25, 2000

Article on Lynch today in the St. Petersberg Times. Lynch interviews about Alstott and the Bucs struggles on defense during the 4th quarter.
On Alstott's frequent fumbles :
"The best thing to do when a guy fumbles is to give it right back to him and I think that's what we need to do."
On the Bucs Defense :
"I think last year we won games when we were in the fourth quarter and were able to hold leads. We've been disappointed in ourselves as a defense in that we haven't been able to hold those leads or make plays to secure those leads in the fourth quarter."

The NFL Films "Under the Helmet" segment with Lynch was pretty sweet. They had him Mic'd for the NFC title game last year against the Rams. He actually talked quite a bit of shit to Marshall Faulk and a few other players. The "NFL FILMS Under the Helmet" Website kind of recaps the segment and has this cool video clip from the show. Lynch will be on "Under The Helmet"
Does Lynch talk trash after a hit? How do his bone crushing hits sound?
This Saturday, a few of those questions will be answered on FOX-TV's weekly "Under the Helmet" program.
Lynch wore a microphone for NFL Films during a game, and the results make up one of the features on this week's "Under the Helmet," which airs each week on FOX at noon (Eastern Time) on Saturday.
How priceless will this be?!?! I can't think of a better reason to watch TV. I will definitely have video clips from the Lynch segment to download on here by monday.

Great article/interview with Lynch today in the St Petersberg Times. Talks about Lynch's kid on the way (due in late November), his contract, his stint as a cook on the food network, and even political views. It's pretty funny, asking him pointless questions like, "boxers or briefs?" check it out:

NFL FILMS "Raw Deals" has been on ESPN and ESPN2 lately. They do a segment on hard hitting safeties, mainly focusing on Lynch, Jack Tatum, and Ronnie Lott. I put together all the highlights of Lynch in it on this video clip. It's 1 minute long (4 megs) but definitely worth checking out.

Article in St Petes Times about the defensive tension, especially the secondary, being a lot lower, with the offense scoring and driving the ball well. Here are a few of Lynch's quotes in it.
"Last year, you had the mindset that every game was going to come right down to the wire," safety John Lynch said. "We talked about playing for 60 minutes and it was almost that we liked those situations, and we still do and I think that will serve us well.
"But playing with these leads is certainly nice."

Lynch Commercial
Did anyone see Lynch's new commercial on ESPN today? It is the NFL Teacher of the Year award. I didnt realize it was Lynch at first because they are showing a boy (Lynch in high school) and he is nervous reading in front of a class of seniors. I wasnt paying attention really until I saw Lynch in his uniform standing in the classroom. I will try and get a vido clip of the commercial on here as soon as possible, it's a good one.

Lynch Interviewed Today
Buccaneers.com will be interviewing Lynch today to kick off the season of "Your Turn," a weekly interview session where the fans submit the questions. I will eventually put a copy of the interview on this site as well.
In other news, Lynch commented to the St. Petersberg Times on Lions' QB Charlie Batch's 3 - 0 record against the Bucs.
"There are some quarterbacks in the league we feel can't beat us," Lynch said. "Well, Charlie Batch is a guy who feels like we can't beat him. He's 3-0 against us and we don't want to establish something like that. It's dangerous when you start to do that. It's a big game for us in that sense."

John Lynch Foundation Announced
John Lynch is allready giving back to the community. Lynch will be donating money from his big, new $24 million contract to charities supported by the John Lynch Foundation for his performance on the field. The foundation, which he started with his wife, Linda, will award scholarships and expand his contributions to his charitable causes. Lynch's play will decide how much contribution he gives.
"As long as I play for the Bucs, Linda and I will commit $100 for each tackle, $1000 for each win, $500 for every interception - thank God I'm not Donnie Abraham - and $500 for every sack."

LYNCH SIGNS
The terms for Lynch's contract were announced today. Lynch has agreed to a 6 year, $24 million deal. Lynch also will will be receiving a $5.6 million signing bonus, and to top it all off, a $650,000 roster bonus, making him the highest paid safety in the league, which he obviously deserves.
"I feel like I'm in the prime of my career and I want to extend that as long as possible," Lynch said.

Practice Update :Lynch is still on the injury report, allthough he practiced today (see photo). Right now he is listed as "probable", which of course means he will be playing, for Sunday's game vs Chicago.

Lynch takes breather

Contract Update: Rumors circulating that Lynch's upcoming contract will be very "buc friendly" allowing him to finish his career in Tampa and a nice size signing bonus as well. The deal will probably be done today or Friday..but it has been delayed the last two times I have said that..so we'll just see.

Paul Gruber officially retired on Tuesday, a sad day for him and his teammates.
Lynch's thought's:

During his tribute to Gruber, strong safety John Lynch recalled fond memories of the lighter side Gruber rarely displayed. Lynch laughed as he remembered the wrestling matches between Gruber and defensive end Marcus Jones before daily warm- ups.
Lynch laughed about the time defensive end Alonzo Spellman learned exactly how strong he was. Gruber got into an uncharacteristic fight with Spellman during a 1994 game against Chicago. ``Alonzo messed with the wrong guy that day,'' Lynch said. ``Paul's a man of principle and the other guy crossed the line and he paid for it.''

Practice Update : Lynch watched practice from the sidelines today, resting the thigh bruise he received from a helmet after his fumble recovery. He will, of course, play Sunday (If the Bucs want to win).

The Lynch deal is here! Lynch is expected to agree to terms at some time today.
General manager Rich McKay indicated that the extension was imminent.
"It's not done yet, but I'm real excited about it," Lynch said.
Needless to say, so are we, John.

Lynch's agent, Leigh Steinberg, reported that they want reach a deal on Lynch's contract by the end of this week, before the team leaves for Boston on Friday. If the bucs ever even came close to losing Lynch, they should end the entire franchise immediately.

Lynch's thoughts on The Bucs' decision to release DT Brad Culpepper:
"To tweak with something that's successful is a risk. They're rolling the dice that we can be a little bit better, and I hope that's the case. I think it's a big risk. I really do. I know from talking to the coaches that they took that into account."
"Whether you agree with the decisions or not, you have to trust that they're doing it for the betterment of the team," said Lynch. "It's hard to do in this case."
"I think the bottom line is that you don't have much time to sit around and dwell on it," Lynch said. "We talk about it all the time - no excuses and no explanations. You've got to go out and trust in their decision-making, that they made a decision for the better of the team."

Lynch and Culpepper are good friends, always roommates on the road trips.
"He's got a tremendous wit and he was pretty extreme. He kept it fun in here. Someone's going to have to pick up the slack."
