Description And Notes
Fleet data: After the sharp defeat at Wolf 359, Starfleet faced the imminent threat of a Borg invasion, and not a few of the Federation's top military minds began thinking that Starfleet's ships could not hold up in a full-on engagement. They quickly set to work designing a new, more powerful frigate that could at least take some steps towards bridging the gap between Borg ships and Starfleet ships. Based loosely off of the Galaxy-class design, this new class of ships fell by the wayside as more work was put into smaller, faster ships, such as the new Defiant-class escorts. However, in 2370, it was once again decided that the project was a viable method of combating the Borg. The initial plans were renovated for newer weaponry, some of it still in the experimental stages, and in many cases were completely reworked from their earlier designs. The name of the class also sparked some controversy, as it seemed to be a testament to the failed guerilla movement against the Cardassians that often infringed upon Starfleet as well as the Cardassians. Despite this, the Maquis-class finally saw production in 2374, and since has become the military darling of Starfleet. With almost unprecedented military power, it is quite possibly the only type of craft that can hope to stand up to the military might of the Borg.

Noteworthy vessels / service records / encounters: U.S.S. Maquis, prototype; U.S.S. Bismark, currently patrolling Federation-Cardassian borders. Also in service: U.S.S. Roosevelt-B, U.S.S. Bellerephon-B, U.S.S. Sun Tzu.

Note to Narrator: For those of you who love running conspiracies in Starfleet, any Maquis-class ship can easily be a recurring foe, as it outclasses nearly any other ship in straight combat. Imagine what would happen if some Starfleet conspirators got one of these to "eliminate" the players... It's also a good choice if you plan to run primarily combat games, as one of these craft can lead to some spectacular space battles.
