What a blast! The Kiel Center had nearly 14,000 fans watching the present indoor soccer team, the Ambush, take on the Cleveland Crunch. Very few of these fans left their seats at half-time so they could watch 34 former Steamers' play one another. In the week that saw the destruction of the Arena (Checkerdome), it was odd to see the Kiel Center crowd sprinkled with Steamers' jerseys, hats, pennants, and signs.
It's hard to describe the feeling of hearing Kevin Slaten announcing (it's really more than just announcing!) the names of players not seen in many years. It may seem a little silly to some to get so excited/misty-eyed about a soccer team that only existed for about 10 years. However, for many of us, this team was extremely important for soccer in St. Louis. In my case, it was my introduction into the world of soocer. Now, I can't imagine not being involved in the game in some way whether it be playing, coaching, or watching. I know I owe at least some of my interest in the sport to the Steamers. I was hooked on indoor soccer the first game I went to - this being from a teenager that thought soccer was boring. Of course, I had based my judgement from watching my brother's 3rd grade outdoor team chase the ball around the field. I may have always thought that soccer was boring, if I had not become a Steamers fan. (I don't think outdoor soccer is boring any more...)
For many, since the team was mostly St. Louisans, this was a great way to showcase and support St. Louis soccer talent. Some came because it was a good family evening out. For whatever reasons, this team clicked with St. Louis sports fans.
I believe one of the reasons the team was so popular was evident again in 1999. After the Ambush game, Steamers' players stayed to sign autographs. We were near the end of the line, and we left near midnight! Despite the long night, these players were still friendly and seemed to be enjoying themselves. It really meant a lot to us, and I hope the players enjoyed it as much as the fans. We're ready for the next reunion!
Thank you to the Steamers and Ambush for reminding us how popular indoor soccer can be in St. Louis.
Another great reunion! We were able to see some of the all-time great of th
MISL, not just our Steamers. The venue this year was the Family Arena in St. Charles,
home of the new version of the Steamers. The autograph session was before the game and, I'd like to
thank all of their players for their time and cooperation.
