THE AMERICANIZATION OF DAVE CLEMENTS:
Certainly, you can understand Dave Clements' confusion.
He came here as coach of the Steamers in the dead of winter -
only the dead of winter never really came here this year.
So Sunday, Clements, a native of Northern Ireland, decided to
take a break from playoff preparations and watch his first haseball
game.
And as we all know, it snowed. It was an unexpected event, but
that did not stop some big flakes from falling, causing the Cards-
Mets game at Busch Stadium to be snowed out.
"I question whether the sport of baseball will succeed in this
country because of the harsh spring weather here," said Clements,
with tongue firmly imbedded in cheek.
"I'm already a football fan, because we have a pro football team
back in Denver, where I live. But my Americanization was going to
be complete when I saw my first baseball game - up close and
personal, as they say."
Clements is nothing if not undaunted. "I'm going to see my first
baseball game next Sunday," he said.
