Introduction

Everyone has read the fairy tale Rapunzel.  She was locked away in a castle tower by a witch.  Poor Rapunzel was all alone with no way to escape.  Her only visitor was the witch.  She would call to Rapunzel, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair"  Rapunzel would lay her long golden braid out of the tower window and the witch would climb up.  One day, as Rapunzel sat singing a handsome Prince heard her lovely voice.  As he hid, he discovered the witch’s entrance and exit through the tower window.  One day, he too called to Rapunzel to let down her hair.  He climbed to the tower where the two eventually fell in love.  In order to escape, the two young people created a plan to get Rapunzel out.

If you would like to read the story Rapunzel, click below and read  an online version of the Grimm fairy tale.

Rapunzel

The Task

The Plan:
Each day when the prince visits Rapunzel, he needs to bring a piece of silken rope to make into a ladder.  Your goal is to gain points to get the thread for the prince.  He needs 50 pieces to make it to the bottom of the tower.  Each time you complete a task, you will gain points.  Keep track of your points on the scoreboard.  When you reach 50, you will have gained enough silken rope pieces to help the prince and Rapunzel escape the tower and live "happily every after!"

Your teacher will need the following assignments. Keep all of your assignments in your webquest folder and turn everything in at one time.

Once your teacher has checked your work, you may print out the certificate of completion to take home and share with your family.

The Process

Did you realize that you can find many different geometric patterns on wallpaper?
Go to the site below to design some wallpaper for her room. You can make the pattern
and choose the colors.  Once you are finished, print a copy for your portfolio.  However,
you will need to find and label at least 3 different geometric shapes in your
    wallpaper pattern.

Conclusion

Geometrical designs are a part of our everyday lives.  Look around and you will find examples of spheres, cones, and rectangular prisms.  From wallpaper to floor tiles, there is no escape from mathematical puzzles and designs.  Even the bricks that imprisoned Rapunzel can be linked to patterns and geometric shapes. Use your senses and explore your world.  You will see that geometry is all around us.
