LENG KEE ORIONZ   1 (Joe)
Moose Men   4

The Orionz were looking to make a name for themselves in this match against the top team in Singapore. However, things went wrong even before the game started. Due to the untimely unavailability of their players, only two was on the bench when the match started.

Much to the shock of everyone, even the Orionz themselves, they took the lead right in the 1st min when Joe smashed a free hit into the goal. The next thing the Orionz knew, Moose Men bombarded them with waves of attack. The Orionz, with the ever-reliable Wayne as keeper defended valiantly until finally in the 17th min, when Moose Men's off-the-ball running got the better of the Orionz defense to score the equaliser. The Orionz had to end the first period trailing by a goal when a tame shot spun into the goal after a goalmouth scramble.

The second period, as always, is the cautious period. Boosted by the arrival of another two players, The Orionz managed to squeeze some shots past the Moose Men defense but they were either saved by the keeper or off target. Moose Men continued to pressure the Orionz defenders but were unable to get the killer third goal.

The Orionz know they could not concede the third goal, and thus were more defensive in their approach in the third period. However as the game wore on, the Orionz were desperate for the equaliser. A counter-attack caught a panicky Orionz defense and they conceded a free hit on the edge of the box and Moose Men duly converted it. With 10 minute left, The Orionz went all out to score but luck was not on their side. Moose Men finished the game off with a stiff shot in the 59th min.

Despite fighting with only ten players, the Orionz gave Moose Men arguably their toughest match this year. Concentration in the third period had to be worked on if we were to excel, but if we continue to improve, the day will come when we finally become one of the top teams in Singapore.

NUS   3

NUS were the favorites to win this game as they had finished 2nd in the league and also had a group of impressive foreigners. But The Orionz refused to be intimidated and were determined to bounce back after the lost to the Tazsilians.

It was an even fight until Alvin struck. He put the Orionz ahead from an acute angle after a good run down the right flank. He then scored a carbon copy of his first goal, this time from the left flank. NUS were shell-shocked but fought even harder as they tried to get themselves back into the game.

The second period were delayed when the referees decided that both teams' jerseys clashed. In the end, NUS had to reveal their muscular bodies and whistles were heard immediately. The Orionz seemed to be happy with the two-goal cushion until NUS scored in the 23rd min. That jolted the Orionz back into reality. They upped their tempo but were unable to play their usual game with NUS's physical style of play. The second period ended with a close scoreline of 2-1.

Joe got The Orionz to a flying start in the third period when he restored their lead. Jeremy made it 4-1 in the 43rd min but NUS scored in the same minute to keep the game exciting. It lasted only 1 minute before Kenneth hit the net with a fantastic long-range drag-shot. Mervyn then scored his first ever league goal in the 51st min from a rebound before Paul killed the game with a close range goal. NUS manage to pull one back 1 minute before full time but it was the Orionz's day as they triumphed 7-3.

The Orionz continued to impress with every game they played but NUS also play a part in our victory. Their physical style backfired, as they often had to play with one man short due to penalties.

TAZSILIAN AROWANA   8

The Orionz entered the game with high hopes of reaching their first final. After all, they have been unbeaten for the past four games.

Both teams made a positive start and it was the Tazsilians who took the lead in the 9th min. The Orionz tried to fight back, but the Tazsilians, lead by Nurazlan, were strong at the back and dangerous in attack. The Orionz decided to be cautious and the first period ended 1-0.

Joe gave The Orionz a great start to the second period, scoring in the 21st min. The joy did not last long though, as the Tazsilians regained their lead in the 25th min. Then, the Orionz utterly collapsed when the Tazsilians opened the floodgates with goals in the 32nd, 35th, 37th, and 38th min. The second period ended 6-1.

The Orionz, after regaining their composure, continued to give Tazsilian a good fight. But against the run of play, the Tazsilians scored in the 50th min. Despite a superb solo goal by Joe in the 55th min, the Tazsilians wrapped up the game with the final goal in the 59th min. 8-2 to the Tazsilians after the final whistle.

The Orionz were on a high before the game, perhaps too high. The lost, though a terrible blow, was a great learning experience. The Orionz league dream ends here but the next target will be the Pesta Sukan!

SKOOLS   2

The Orionz are in the semi-finals of the Singapore Floorball League after beating Skools 4-2. Both teams fought tooth and nail but it was the Orionz who had the slight edge.

Skools started the match by testing the Orionz's keeper, Wayne, with some stiff long-range shots. Wayne, however, was unfazed and dealt with them easily. The Orionz also manage to create some chances but were unable to convert them. It ended 0-0 after the first period.

The Orionz took charge of the 2nd period and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 22nd min. Clarence played a one-two with Alvin and smashed a powerful grounder past the Skool's keeper. Then in the 25th min, the Orionz defense was caught flat-footed and the Skool's hitman was left with an easy tap-in. 10 minutes later, The Orionz regained their lead through Ian after some good pressure on the Skool's defender. Skools replied with swift counter-attacks but an inspired Wayne nullified their efforts. Skools just could not find a way through a tight Orionz defense marshaled by Joe, Paul, Ruy and Jick Sern. In the 36th min, Skools succumbed to the Orionz's high-pressure attacks again as Jeremy volleyed the ball into the goal to make it 3-1. The Orionz were then penalized with a two-min penalty but held on.

Surprisingly, it was the Orionz who had the first chance in the third period to score but Skools gradually took control. In the 53rd min, Joe scored the Orionz fourth from out of the blue. The Orionz bench could not wait to hear the final whistle but their hearts missed a beat when Skools pulled one back in the 57th min. Skools then took out their keeper and bombarded the Orionz with their numerical advantage. It was risky as the Orionz tried to score at the empty goal but their shots were either blocked or hit the post. Finally, the referee blew for full-time. The Orionz had arrived!

Despite being unable to train together regularly due to school and work commitments, the Orionz seemed to have formed a telepathic understanding between them. It was obvious individuals had work hard to improve themselves during the one month break. Skools said they had run out of luck against the Orionz but they were just being humble.

SKOOLS   4

It was the final league game of the season and both teams were eager to end it with a bang. Skools were chasing for second place while the Orionz were looking to avoid the relegation play-offs.

The Orionz, who had improved rapidly, got off to a fine start when Joe put them ahead in the 8th minute. Their joy did not last long as Skools then scored two in quick succession to snatch the lead from The Orionz. The first period ended 2-1 to Skools.

Both teams started cautiously in the second period. There was lots of hard running but not much action at the goalmouths. The only notable event was when a Skools player injured his knee after tripping. No goal was scored in the second period.

It was in the third period where all the action came fast and furious. Chances were created every minute but it was Skools who took theirs in the 51st minute. Before the Orionz could settle down Skools scored what seemed to be the clincher. With five minutes left, The Orionz decided to field their best five for the reminding time. Joe finally managed to pull one back for the Orionz in the 58th minute. Ruy then scored a minute later for with seemed nothing more than a consolation goal, but the Orionz would not give up. With 14 seconds left on the clock, Leng Kee conjured up their third magical comeback in as many games when they scored a dramatic equaliser. Alvin was left carelessly unmarked and he gratefully accepted the gift.

The Orionz did a Houdini and escaped a relegation play-off. They have improved tremendously but need to shake off the unusual habit of chasing the game.

LENG KEE ORIONZ   4 (Syaiful, Alvin, Paul 2)
OUTRAM INSTITUTE   3

The Orionz were looking to build on their first win in the previous game with another against a much-improved Outram Institute.

The Orionz started brightly and grabbed an early lead in the 4th minute. A jiggling run down the flank by Alvin resulted in a powerful cross and left Syaiful with the easiest of tap-ins. The Orionz were growing in confidence with every touch, but this confidence was rocked when O.I. hit back with an equaliser. They deployed their famous counter-attack and caught the Orionz defense napping. Suddenly, the Orionz defense was thrown into confusion and O.I. took advantage to lead 2-1 at the end of the first period.

The Orionz came back strongly in the second period but met an equally resistant O.I. Both teams gave it their all and the referees had to be alert for foul play. Despite a very physical second period, there was no usual flare of temper. T hen out of the blue came the equaliser by Alvin after Jeremy laid a perfect pass for him to slam the ball in.

With 20 minutes remaining, both team decided to up the tempo and go for the kill. O.I made a grave mistake when they committed a foul just on the half line. Joe passed the ensuing free-hit across to Paul and he duly smashed the ball into the top corner of the goal. The Orionz laid siege on the O.I goal, but again from a swift counter-attack, O.I equalised. They seemed to have salvaged a point, but Paul, who was playing his last league game before enlistment would not allow that to happen. In the last minute, he popped up at the corner of the goal and touch in the winner.

It was a perfect farewell victory for Paul who may be back for the play-off. The Orionz again left it late to win the game. However, it was nice to see them string passes together. If they can build on that, a much better finish may be in store for the Leng Kee Orionz next season.

LENG KEE ORIONZ   5 (Jeremy 3, Ian, Alvin)
KNIGHTS   4

The Orionz and the Knights fought tooth and nail for what could be their first win of the season. By the narrowest of margins, the Orionz triumphed in a hotly contested match, typical of cellar dwellers.

The Knights employed the long ball forward as their main weapon in the first period, as they would throughout the game. The lobs caused some problems for the Orionz, but it was they who took the lead. Preferring to launch their offence on the ground, the Orionz led as early as the 2nd min. Jeremy got the goal, scoring from close range. Barely four minutes later, the Knights hit the post, but followed up to net the rebound. One apiece. Near the end of the first period, Shaiful and Mervyn both missed wonderful chances in front of goal. Both teams entered the interval on level terms.

Having committed a 2-min penalty in the last minute of the first period, the Orionz opened the second with four men. The numerical disadvantage was telling, as the Knights planted a long shot past the Orionz keeper, Ridzal. Eager to extend their lead, the Knights piled on the pressure. In the 29th min, Jeremy was penalised for incorrect distance. From the ensuing free-hit, the Knights went 3-1 up. Jeremy kept the Orionz in the game though, when he scored to end the period 3-2 to the Knights.

The last period was a crucial one with the game finely balanced. Ian, in only his second ever game, gave the Orionz hope with an equaliser. The goal came out of the blue, with Ian beating the keeper from a near-impossible angle. Those hopes were soon extinguished when the Knights went in front again, another long shot. Wayne, who had his view blocked, had little chance. It was the last time the Knights led though, as Jeremy wrapped up his hat-trick with yet another equaliser. In almost the last minute of the match, Alvin scored what proved to be the winner.

The Orionz finally came good with their first win, despite not playing as well as they could. In truth, they were always chasing the game, leading only at the start and finish. Leading at the finish was all it mattered though, and the Leng Kee Orionz chalked up their first victory since formation.

LENG KEE ORIONZ   2 (Beizhen 2)
OUTRAM INSTITUTE   6

The final game of the season for the Leng Kee Orionz and OI was also the decider for the honour of being the second best ladies' club in Singapore.

The Orionz came into the game severely handicapped as they only had a handful of players, with the majority unavailable. The fast-improving OI would prove a huge obstacle to overcome. In previous games, the Orionz have struggled to score, and matters were made worse in this game with top-scorer Ser Khee not playing.

OI never fell behind in this encounter, leading throughout the game. The Orionz only managed a goal each in the second and third period (both scored by Beizhen) against the six they conceded. With the limited resources they had on the bench, the Orionz ladies were fighting a lost cause.

It was pity that the Orionz did not have a full squad to challenge OI in this crucial contest, and third spot in the Ladies' Division was tamely surrendered to OI.

LENG KEE ORIONZ   2 (Kenneth, Joe)
MOOSEMEN   10

The Leng Kee Orionz came into this game on the back of three straight defeats. They truly had their work cut out for them in taking on the formidable Moosemen.

Set out to defend, the Orionz held out for half of the first period before finally conceding the opener. Moosemen pounded the Orionz goal, but stout defending repelled wave upon waves of attacks. The period ended 1-0 to the Moosemen.

The Orionz went from strength to strength in the second period, and duly drew level when Kenneth slammed in a goal as the Moosemen keeper was caught out of position. The Moosemen were getting increasingly frustrated, as they could not break down the wall of Orionz defenders. Woon Yang, one of the Orionz's rearguards, sustained an injury and was unable to continue. Almost immediately after that incident, the Moosemen score a fine goal to finally move in front.

The Moosemen restored logic to the scoreline when they opened the floodgates in the last period. The Orionz conceded eight more goals as they totally lost the plot. The Orionz defence was falling to pieces. Nevertheless, Joe scored the goal of the game when he beat three Moosemen to beat Martin, the Moosemen's national keeper. It was a simply magnificent goal, a wonderful piece of individual flair.

The Orionz played the best two periods of their lives in the first two, and it was indeed refreshing to see the Moosemen struggling to score. The Moosemen even got a roasting form their coach in the second period. He was simply livid with his charges for allowing the Orionz to equalise. Neutrals who watched the game would feel that the score was not a true measure of the Leng Kee Orionz, and the Moosemen probably got the fright of their season.

LENG KEE ORIONZ   5 (Ser Khee, 3, Beizhen, Qiao)
XISHAN/NORTHLAND   2

Leng Kee Orionz ladies notched their second win of the season with an easy victory over Xishan/Northland. It was a much-needed tonic after suffering consecutive losses to Moosettesz I & II.

Orionz started the game sluggishly. The defence looked extremely vulnerable and shaky. It did not matter though, as the Orionz raced into a three-goal first period lead. In the 8th min, Ser Khee's shot was deflected into the goal. Six minutes later, Beizhen fired a tame shot from distance and saw it trickle pass the static opponent defence. In the 20th min, Xishan/Northland committed the first of their six 2-min penalties. From the free-hit, Ser Khee shot the ball straight through the keeper's legs. A minute earlier, Ser Khee was unlucky not to win a penalty when two players chopped her down on her way to goal. Xishan/Northland mustered only one decent shot at goal, and Shaeen saved the long shot.

As the second period commenced, Xishan/Northland began to claw their way back into the game. In only the 2nd min of the period, a Xishan/Northland player spun and scored with a fine shot. In the 27th and 34th minutes, Xishan/Northland gave the Orionz two more Power Plays. The Orionz, however, struggled to extend their lead. Ser Khee hit the bar with a shot from the flank in the 19th min. Tough luck.

The Xishan/Northland comeback continued when Beizhen deflected a shot past Shaeen. There were 17 more minutes for the Orionz to eke out a win. In the 45th min, Ser Khee brought the ball a long way before beating the Xishan/Northland keeper from close range. It was the Orionz's fourth Power Play two minutes later. Xishan/Northland was desperately unlucky not to score in the 49th min. First, Shaeen produced a great save, and then a Xishan/Northland shot crashed onto the underside of Shaeen's bar and rebounded out. Shaeen made another outstanding save from point blank range to maintain the Orionz's lead. Xishan/Northland scored in the 53rd min after some good passing, but the goal was disallowed because an attacker was in Shaeen's area. Soon after, Shaeen once again shone when she made a double-save from point blank range. Xishan/Northland then had their fifth player sit in the penalty area. Qiao settled matters when she shot through the keeper's legs three minutes from time. Xishan/Northland completed a half dozen 2-min penalties in the last minute.

Xishan/Northland camped in the Orionz half in the last period, but were unable to beat a magnificent Shaeen. A Ser Khee hat-trick and some inept Xishan/Northland goalkeeping made sure the Orionz bagged full points in this encounter.

LENG KEE ORIONZ   2 (Joe, 2)
MOOSE HAMMERS   9

The Orionz suffered their third straight defeat at the hands of the Moose Hammers, who had the help of a few foreigners and two Japanese internationals.

The Moose Hammers went on the offensive right from the start and took the lead through a very skillful Toki. The Orionz just could not find their rhythm and went two nil down to a strike by Stefan. Jason Quek finished the first period with the Hammer's third.

The second period saw the worst ever performance by the Orionz. In a frantic three-minute period, the Hammers smashed three past Orionz's unprotected keeper, Wayne. Jason got one more before the Orionz decided to try rookie keeper Ridzal out. Joe finally pull one back with an effort from long range. He then gave the Orionz some hope with a well-taken penalty.

In the third period, the Orionz felt that it was too late for a comeback and decided to abandon all tactics and play with their heart. The Orionz were clearly enjoying themselves despite conceding a further two goals to end the match 2-9. They had more shots at goal than the previous two periods put together.

Despite the scoreline, it was a great experience playing with so many top-class players. It also served as a wake-up call for the Orionz to improve as a team.

LENG KEE ORIONZ   3 (Alvin, Jeremy, Renjie)
TAZSILIAN AROWANA   6

Having lost their opening matches in the league, both Leng Kee Orionz and Tazsilian Arowana needed a win in this encounter.

The Orionz could not have started better, scoring in the very first minute. Having won the face-off, some neat Orionz passing left Alvin squaring off against the last Tazsilian defender. He beat the defender and scored from close range. The Tazsilians came right back at the Orionz. A speculative pass across the Orionz goal was deflected into the goal by Woon Yang. An own goal. The game was finely balanced at this point, but the Tazsilians got the lead for the first time following another Orionz error. Ian, trying to dribble out of defence, was dispossessed. The result was an unstoppable shot from barely 3m out.

The Orionz again scored right from the face-off at the start of period two. Jeremy spinning and beating the Tazsilian keeper from distance. At this stage, it was still anybody's game. Yet another Orionz error, however, handed the lead permanently to the Tazsilians. Wayne, eager to put the ball back into play, rushed his throw and gave the ball straight to a Tazsilian right in front of goal. 3-2. Jick Sern was then given a 2-min penalty when he blocked a throw-out from the Tazsilian keeper. Incorrect distance, very quick thinking by the Tazsilian keeper. From the ensuing Power Play, the Tazsilians scored another. It was 5-2 after a Tazsilian was allowed to shoot right in front of Wayne unchallenged. End of period two, and the game was slipping out of the Orionz's grip.

The Orionz committed the mother of all errors in the third period when they substituted as the Tazsilians won a free-hit near the Orionz goal. The goal was inevitable as five Tazsilians faced Wayne. The Orionz were handing the game to the Tazsilians on a plate. Renjie then gave the Orionz a glimmer of hope when he scored from close range to make it 6-3. With nothing to lose, the Orionz played the last five minutes with an empty net, relentlessly pounding the Tazsilian goal. The Tazsilian keeper made several terrific saves to repel the Orionz onslaught. The score stayed, and it was two defeats in a row for the league debutantes.

It was an exceptionally clean game, with the referees hardly having to use their whistles. Despite the scoreline, the Orionz could easily have won the match, if not for some horrendous defending. A draw would have been a more fitting result, but the 1st Division is no place for schoolboy defending, and the Tazsilians just about deserved their 1st victory.

LENG KEE ORIONZ   2 (Joe, Kenneth)
NUS   4

The men from Leng Kee Orionz were unsuccessful in their first ever game, losing 2-4 to NUS in the 2001 Singapore Floorball League.

Many in the team were playing together competitively for the first time, especially new additions Joe, Paul, and Mervyn. Yet to gel as a unit, the Orionz were put under pressure right from the start. Before the Orionz even settled down to playing, they were already one goal down. Orionz keeper, Wayne blocked a shot from NUS, but the sheer power of the shot was enough to see the ball trickle into the goal. NUS attacked throughout the first period, but were unable to extend their advantage, and the period ended 1-0 to NUS.

The second period continued in the same fashion, with the Orionz unable to get their game going. But as the period wore on, the NUS keeper got busier. Gradually improving, the Orionz started to pin NUS back. The pressure, however, did not transform into goals. Instead, NUS's counterattacking game, coupled with some careless defending by the Orionz, resulted in more goals for NUS. Wayne was thrice left with no chance as NUS grabbed three more goals from point-blank range. The points looked in the bag for NUS as they went into the second interval 4-0 up.

Radical changes were needed if the Orionz wanted to get anything from the game. As the third period started, the Orionz went for broke, throwing four men into attack. The move paid off, and Joe pulled a goal back with a stiff shot into the right corner of the NUS goal. The NUS goal was constantly pounded, and Kenneth gave the Orionz hope when he made the score 2-4 with a free-hit from fully 20m out. The Orionz were going from strength to strength as the lines finally got their act together. But luck was not on the Orionz's side, and the comeback never materialised. It was a matter of too little, too late for the Leng Kee Orionz. NUS emerged eventual winners in this pulsating encounter.
