Vale Gordon Leonard
Donald “Postie”
Gordon died 10th October – 3 months after the demise
of his wife Joan. His funeral service on 14th
October was well attended by his family, friends, the RSL and a contingent
of Lizards. Gordon had no children of his own but enjoyed
10 grand-nieces and nephews – and those of them that spoke at the service
all expressed love and admiration – a feeling echoed by everyone who knew
him.
Well done Postie
A note from one of his grand-nieces, Vanessa Smythe, is reproduced
at the end of this edition of the Flat Out Like.
WELCOME TO MORGAN-MOONEY DAY Mk VII.
The eminems Michael and Chris are today’s donors and were famous for their frequent catering skills in the 90’s. Chris ended a period of hand written Flat Out Likes when he put them into black and ink in May ’04 – then added colour photos in December ’04. Our subscribers were startled in August by a life sized head on portrayal of Michael Harrison staring back from the front page. Our Victualler is Vice President and curator of the Lizard website in his spare time. Michael Morgan is filling the seat vacated by Postie.
CASTLE-HILL PLATE DAY, with 17 Lizards and 3 visitors, ushered in our Spring

PUTTING COMPETITION Ivan Tiltins - 30 putts
DONORS Glenn and Wal, to keep the Captain/Handicapper on the brink, added
prizes for the 10th and last in Lizards, as well as a putting
competition.
Wal finished second last and Glenn was absa-plutely last.
BRIAN ELLIS enjoyed the innovation
– he picked up best back nine and 10th place.
BOB PAINE, with a flick of
the wrist to stay a point ahead of Jim Small, inadvertently won the day.
IVAN TILTINS, winning visitor,
secured the putting competition with 30 putts – and whilst on the dais had
his application for membership put through the managerial mangle and OK’d
by the populous. Congratulations Ivan, we wish you
a long and fruitful association with the Lizards.
NON PLAYING VISITOR, GEOFF
WADE, of the Brian Ellis school, made his second or third appearance at Avalon
“because he enjoys being there”. Bill Sheehan thinks
it’s a great idea – Geoff is very capable and keen to assist around the shed.
THE 2005 SAFARI to Niftyland
has run its course and, from early reports, enjoyed by all. The new nine at Emerald Downs is still a bit fresh but
will be well on the way to maturity by the end of this summer. The management welcomed the Lizards and a BBQ on Saturday
followed by a sissage sozzle on Sunday added to the friendly environment around
the course. Results of the away from home competitions
should catch up with this edition.
CHRISTMAS, with our well
travelled overseas member, DAWSON CARROLL, being the next highlight on the
calendar, caused the computer to be kick started – Google pressed and travel
dates requested. After a few sparks the silicon cornflake
came up with “Out of range. Last seen following a white
ball around a lizard infested antipodean harbour”.

Reprint of an email from
Vanessa Smythe, one of Postie’s Great Grand-nieces.
Dear Chris
I am not really sure where to start to say thank you. I promised myself I would not cry again, but must say these beautiful photos have put me over the edge. My name is Vanessa and I am Gordy's 'Granddaughter' (grand niece to be precise, but since he had no children of his own, we always classified him as our Grandfather and to him we were Grandchildren), I wish that I had known that these existed. I never even thought to ask anyone from the Lizards about pici's, stupid really, considering that apart from us he looked on the Lizards as his extended family.
God he loved to play, one of the last things that he ever told me as he lay dying in his bed was that being Lizards Treasurer for 20 odd years was one of his greatest achievements and he was so very very upset about the fact that he had been made 'Honourary' Treasurer, in fact it was the only time I ever remember seeing him cry. He loved to play and he loved his mates, I still remember as a child asking what he was doing on the weekend and him saying "It's Lizards Day, pet" and off he would go.
Thank you so much for the photos I will cherish them and add them to the very few that we had, mostly of when he was in the war. I am so glad that you got to see him and get photos of him 'at play', I especially love the one of him in the golf buggy, it is so him.
Kindest Regards Chris, thanks again
Vanessa Smythe
