PRESIDENT GARRY BIRD LM WISHES THE MEMBERS, VISITORS AND OUR READERS IN AUSTRALIA AND OVERSEAS

A HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

WELCOME TO MANFRED WAGNER’S CAPTAIN’S AND HANDICAPPER’S DAY.  Manfred is mid way though his 5th year of his mastering of this formidable task.  An indication of his mastery came to light following the heads down, all-in, win or bust struggle, by 21 players, to be the recipient at the annual presentation of the prestigious Dawson Carroll Cup.

When the dust settled, all players, except the winner, scored in the 30s – the average overall score was 35.5 points – every handicapper’s impassable goal!  Hats off to Manfred – may he long reign over us.

CHRSITMAS CARROLL DAY, with 26 Lizards and no visitors, produced the following results:

1st LIZARDS    Neil Winterton - 43 points off 16 handicap
2nd LIZARDS    Ian Massey - 39 points on count-back off 18 handicap
BEST SCRATCH    Michael Harrison - 32 points
BEST FRONT NINE    Dennis Castle - 24 points on count-back off 22 handicap
BEST BACK NINE    Colin Lacey - 22 points off 24 handicap
NEAREST the PINS    19+    1st    A Skinner    3rd    Gary Castle
    18-    1st    Andrew Warner LM    4th    A Skinner
LONGEST DRIVES    19+    2nd    Frank Van Heyningan
    18-    2nd    Michael Harrison
BRADMAN     Lizards     Jim Small - 32 points off 13 handicap

ASSISTANT HANDICAPPER NEIL WINTERTON, with news of Chris Mooney’s recent personal best in mind, played his own best round.  A sedate 18 points on the first nine – placing him 5th in the field and 6 points short of leader Dennis Castle, at the halfway mark.

With 9 to play, he annihilated the opposition by firing seven birdies and two pars – the equivalent of completing the second nine one stroke over the card!  He burst through the tape 4 points ahead of Ian Massey, Michael Harrison and Dennis Castle – all on 39.  Dawson Carroll was next in line with 38.

Congratulations Neil – you would have paid a motzer on the tote, as your name was not being bandied about the bookmakers stalls prior to hit off.

THE DONORS AWARD of the YALUMBA SERIES OF WINES rounded of Neil’s memorable day.

IAN MASSEY celebrated his second trip to the pay window, since becoming a Lizard, by winning the 3 way countback, with a 22 pointer, to secure second place and the bottle of CHIVAS REGAL.

MIDWAY LEADER, Dennis Castle, shot himself in the foot with a 15 pointer on the run home.

MANFRED made it to the course from the infirmary, to see fair play and join in the cellubreations, armed with a graphic looking camera which he put to good use.  We hope to see some results of his snap decisions.

ONE SHOT was of JIM SMALL when he was declared BRADMAN and had to don the octopus shaped skullcap whilst doing a rain dance in the shed, mid spitzen and sparken and bell ringen, having lost on a countback from Pres. Garry Bird for the dubious honour, “after 17 unsullied years.”

JIM was responsible for the dazzling refurbishment of the D.C. Cup – now, when you examine the sizeable trophy, all you can see is a panoramic reflection of the surrounding region with yourself in the centre.  A Well Done of the highest order from Dawson and company for a major improvement that will be admired for years to come.

GEOFF WARREN dropped in after a considerable absence and advised he misses coming to Lizards as he is usually around a swimming pool on weekends.  It turns out his current job is to transform backyard tiled swamps into crystal clear skinny-dippers’ delights.

VICKI came down to wish the Lizards a Happy Christmas and gave a brief rundown on future alterations to the Clubhouse.  When asked what will happen to the shed she replied with a smile “That structure has been Heritage Listed”!

FINES, some were:

Michael Harrison    bringing one of Michael Morgan’s best shots to a halt with his
    ankle.

Col Lacey    being unhappy with the appearance of his golfclub, so he
    wrapped it around a tree.

Greg Elks    ducks on the pond – having his wife drive out to the course to
bring the “gift” he left at home.

Wal Hill    answering a mobile phone on the course with “Hello Sue”
when it was Judy who called.

Postie, Greg Elks    Credit Fine – going to the fiskmarkets at 5:30am to get prawns
Chief Dobber    for the Christmas lunch

Postie    knowing heads go into hats, so he filled his hat with prawn
heads at the Lizards Christmas prawn fest.

POSTIE has provided a mid – year treasurer’s report as at December:

Cost for Port Macquarie BBQ    $200
Cost for Xmas prawns    $300
