June 2004

WELCOME to VICE PRESIDENT’S DAY.

Colin Lacey, our genial VP, can be blamed for the highly successful onslaught by the verdant Greengaters in February.  Any suspicions they were descendants of the Florida Everglades gators proved to be unfounded – and they will be back soon enough.

TODAY, the finishing touches on the Lizard menu for 2003/04 are the Father and Son Annual Trophy and the Grand Final of Lindenberg K/O/ Competition.

TO QUALIFY for the Father and Son Event, all you need is to be teamed with your son, stepson, son-in-law, grandson, or your father, step father or grandfather.  Dennis Castle seems to have the rails position being coupled with 2 sons and a grandson.

PRESIDENT’S DAY, with 17 members and 3 visitors, produced the following results:

LIZARDS 1st                                     Philip Brandon - 39 points off 32 handicap

LIZARDS 2nd                                    Glenn Castle - 38 points off 30 handicap

PHILIP BRANDON, has won his last 3 monthly matches!  He won the Visitors in March, was reduced 4 shots and won the April visitors with 30 points, by being the sole visitor – then, after the prize giving, was inducted into the Lizards fraternity.  Playing for the President’s Trophy last month, he pipped the President by one shot and picked up a hole in one and long drive for good measure.  Phillip is the only new member to arrive with a copy of the Constitution in his briefcase – he downloaded the information from the Lizards website.  Congratulations on your impressive beginnings – we wish you a long and happy association with the Lizards.

MOUNTAN MAN Bob Paine carded a comfortable 36 pointer off his 6 handicap.

WAL HILL joined the airies choir, scored too well to be bradman and hit the highlights with nearest the pins on consecutive holes.  Well played Walter.

LAST MONTH PRESIDENT Glenn conducted the after match meeting in the absence of the BELL – the only device capable of making a greater hollow sound than the few in the audience who chose to exhibit their clever mastery of tongue-foo, while the pres, is endeavouring to announce the list of trophy winners.

The BELL is a treasured asset, having spent it’s working life clanging around the neck of “Pansy” the cow, who grazed on a property, owned by Lance Try’s parents, in the brook-vale, a colourful marsh of the greenest grass, reeds and waterlillies, on the site where the Brookvale Mall now stands.  The piped brook still flows and hits the lights of day in the Northern tip of the Warringah Golf Course and flows down its Eastern border, finding its way to the sea at Queenscliff.  We hope the bell finds its way back to its rightful place on the shed.

LINDENBERG SEMI-FINAL RESULTS:

Jim Small                       def      Dennis Castle 4&3

Michael Harrison           vs        Andrew Warner – draw

The play-off conducted at the Mangrove Mountain game, was won by Michael Harrison.

JIM SMALL, triple title holder, and MICHAEL HARRISON have met as Lindenberg finalists previously, the most recent occasion being last year when Michael won the title for the first time.

We wish them the best of luck for today’s match.

THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP will be decided today.  The scuttlebutt after the April match was that it was a 2 man race – Neil Winterton and Michael Harrison, both with 90 points.

The leading also-ran was the tenacious Dennis Castle on 77.  In May Michael came in ahead of Neil and, in this final dash, it is possible that Michael is leading with 102 to Neil’s 96.  It makes for an exciting finish.

PRESIDENT GLENN CASTLE, for President’s Day, arranged the most sumptuous spread seen this millennium – Moulin Rouge sized chicken legs, roast pork with crackling that dissolved in the mouth, spicy meat balls and a roll of roast beef – not forgetting the hearty soup at the half way mark.  Well done Glenn – and what must have been a culinary of cooks.

THE AGM will be held on Tuesday 6th July at the DY RSL.  Arrive between 6 and 6:30pm to have time for a couple of drinks in the SCORES bar prior to the meal at 7pm in a reserved section of the bistro.  More info at the meeting.

ANNUAL SUBS are due for a mention.  $10 for members and, to help cover the postage of FOL, $5 for country members.  We can be early by paying today or wait for the due date in July.
